Halo Studios used its October 2025 Halo World Championship broadcast to announce Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. Per the studio’s official “Introducing Halo: Campaign Evolved” post on Halo Waypoint, the game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and it has since been dated for July 28, 2026, with early access from July 23 for Premium and Collector’s Edition owners (Xbox Wire, June 7, 2026). The headline the reveal buried under its concept art: this is the first Halo game ever playable on a PlayStation console.

    Master Chief Boards a PlayStation

The remake’s loudest news has nothing to do with graphics. For 25 years Halo was the reason people bought an Xbox, and now the campaign that built that reputation ships on Sony’s console. Community director Brian Jarrard, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly timed to the October 2025 reveal, framed the PlayStation launch as another way to introduce new players to Halo, and he has since teased, as reported by Space.com, that new Halo games will be multiplatform, same-day releases going forward. That is a clean break from the exclusivity that once defined the brand.

I understand the business logic, and I still feel the strangeness of it. Halo was console-war ammunition, the thing you pointed at when someone waved a PlayStation controller. Microsoft has spent the last few years turning its exclusives into cross-platform products, and shared progression is the industry’s direction of travel. We watched a version of this play out years ago with Bungie’s cross-save experiment on Destiny, where the studio that created Halo taught players to carry one character across every platform. Campaign Evolved extends that logic to the mothership, with cross-play and shared progression across Xbox, PC, Steam, and PS5.

    A Remake, Not Another Remaster

This is the part longtime fans should sit with. In 2011, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary gave the original a graphical coat of paint you could toggle on and off. Campaign Evolved is a full rebuild, constructed in Unreal Engine 5 after Halo Studios showed off its 2024 “Project Foundry” tech demo. The distinction is the whole point, because a rebuild invites changes a remaster never would.

According to Xbox Wire (June 7, 2026), the package adds Operation: METEORITE, a three-mission prequel arc set a year before the original that follows Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson behind Covenant lines aboard a research vessel. Halo Studios has also folded in gameplay-modifying “Skulls,” two-player split-screen on consoles, up to four-player online co-op on console and PC, an optional third-person camera, remastered music, and re-recorded voice lines. “Faithful yet modernized” is the studio’s own framing, and that phrase carries real tension. Skulls and an expanded arsenal reward the players who already know these levels by heart, while the new missions risk diluting the tight, mysterious loop that made Combat Evolved land in the first place.

    Twenty-Five Years of the Ring

The timing is deliberate. 2026 marks 25 years of both Halo and Xbox, and remaking the campaign that started it all is a statement about where the franchise plants its flag. This is where I care most, because Combat Evolved is not just any entry to revisit. When we put together the definitive ranking of the Halo campaigns, the original’s clean design and sense of discovery held up against everything that followed it. Rebuilding that specific game sets a high bar for reverence.

Halo has been adapted before with mixed results, and we dug into the franchise’s tonal choices when we covered the Halo TV series and its morally grey read on the UNSC. A remake is a gentler kind of adaptation than a live-action series, since themuch can you change before the thing stops feeling like Halo?

    Final Thoughts

A faithful remake has to justify its own existence, and Campaign Evolved is betting that a new platform audience plus a fresh coat of Unreal Engine 5 is reason enough. I am not fully sold that it is, at least not on the reveal alone. What sells me is the intent behind it: Halo Studios treating this as the opening move of a new era rather than a nostalgia cash-in, with the strong implication that Combat Evolved is only the first campaign getting this treatment. If the studio can rebuild these rings without sanding off what made them strange and lonely and thrilling, I will happily walk the Silent Cartographer again. On any console I like.
