Pokemon.com is celebrating 30 years of Pokémon by looking back at the regions that have captured the hearts of fans across the world. Get ready to take a few trips down memory lane as we explore and reflect on iconic locations and encounters from regions across the Pokémon world. We’ve already visited Kanto to Unova, making the Kalos region the next stop on our journey.
From its introduction in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Kalos established itself as a region of unparalleled beauty and culture where fashion, art, and intense Pokémon battles take priority. Boasting a rich history, adorable Pokémon, and fierce Trainers, the Kalos region is well worth a visit.

Vaniville Town
This is where it all begins. Vaniville Town might be the smallest town in Kalos, but there’s something to be said for its sleepy pastoral charm. In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, it’s the protagonist’s hometown and the launchpad for an epic journey. The protagonist also returns to this “town whose flower is about to bloom” at the conclusion of their adventure, reinforcing that there’s no place like home.
In Pokémon Adventures: X •Y, Vaniville Town has a slightly larger population, but the overall aesthetic is pretty similar…until Xerneas and Yveltal start fighting in the middle of town! It turns out two Legendary Pokémon can do a lot of damage. With his small, bucolic hometown in ruins, the protagonist X sets off on an adventure with his friends. But Vaniville Town is not doomed to perpetual ruin, as X returns at the conclusion of his journeyand resumes his life in a new home.
Fortunately for residents of Vaniville Town, Xerneas and Yveltal do not go on a rampage in the animation. In fact, the first glimpse of Vaniville Town in Pokémon the Series reinforces its identity as a haven of domesticity from the very first moment we see it. There are no dramatic Pokémon battles or showdowns with villainous Pokémon thieves, just a Fletchling landing on the windowsill of a house and a woman asking it to wake up her daughter.
From Serena’s perspective, Vaniville Town might be a little too quiet. She spends her days reluctantly practicing Rhyhorn racing at her mother’s insistence, until she spots her old friend Ash on the news trying to save a raging Garchomp at Prism Tower in Lumiose City. As it turns out, this is the push she needs to travel to Lumiose City to meet her own first partner Pokémon. But no matter where her journey takes her, or how many friends and Pokémon she meets along the way, Vaniville Town will always be home.

Laverre City
Known as “the city of otherworldly dreams” and built around an ancient tree, Laverre City is the perfect host for the first Fairy-type Gym that we’ve come across in the Pokémon games. It’s difficult to imagine a world without Fairy-type Pokémon, but before the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, that was exactly the situation we found ourselves in. It was in Laverre City that we encountered the Fairy-type specialist and Gym Leader, Valerie. The Gym resembled a charming dollhouse, matching Laverre City’s ethereal aesthetic. While Valerie uses several Fairy-type Pokémon in battle, her signature Pokémon is Sylveon, the Fairy-type Eevee Evolution known as the Intertwining Pokémon.
The introduction of Fairy-type Pokémon provided a much-needed counter against the Dragon-type Pokémon that previously dominated Pokémon VGC. In fact, the 2014 Pokémon World Championships was the first to feature Fairy-type Pokémon, and three of the four top teams—including Sejun Park’s famous winning team—included Fairy types.
Fairy-type Pokémon play a major role in Kalos’s history—especially the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas, featured on the cover of Pokémon X. The discovery of this new type marked a major shift, with 22 Pokémon discovered in previous regions changing type—six becoming Fairy-type Pokémon, while the rest became dual Fairy-type Pokémon. Twelve new Fairy-type Pokémon were discovered, including popular pink icons like Sylveon, Spritzee, and Diancie. In addition to offering a powerful competitive challenge to Dragon-type Pokémon, Fairy-type Pokémon brought a grace and charm to the Pokémon world befitting the culture found in the Kalos region.

Tower of Mastery
Before Primal Reversion, Z-Moves, and Dynamax and Gigantamax—Pokémon X and Pokémon Y blew us away with the introduction of Mega Evolution. Referred to as “the Evolution that transcends Evolution,” this temporary item-induced transformation strengthens the Pokémon and triggers a physical transformation.
That first fateful Mega Evolution encounter occurs at the Tower of Mastery in Shalour City when Korrina gifts the protagonist with a Mega Ring and challenges them to a Lucario-versus-Lucario battle. There’s a reason that the first Mega Evolution happens at the Tower of Mastery.
“When I’m here with my Pokémon, looking at the wide-open sky above, all my worries disappear, and I feel like I can do anything!” Korrina explains. “It was decided that this must be the place where the Mega Ring is handed over. Something about making sure we never forget to set our sights as high as the sky.”
Initially, 26 Pokémon were capable of undergoing Mega Evolution, with Charizard and Mewtwo boasting two different forms, referred to as Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Mewtwo X, and Mega Mewtwo Y. Pokémon Omega Rubyand Pokémon Alpha Sapphire expanded that list with 20 additional Mega-Evolved Pokémon. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a whopping 48 new Mega Evolutions were discovered.
Mega Evolution might have started at the Tower of Mastery in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, but it quickly expanded its reach. The first Mega Evolution Pokémon debuted in the Pokémon Trading Card Game: XY expansion. In the first episode of Season 17 of Pokémon the Series, “Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!,” Ash catches a brief glimpse of Mega Blaziken. And the first Mega Evolution in the Pokémon Adventures manga occurs in the X •Y arc in “X-Actly What They Wanted” when Li’l Kanga Mega Evolves during a battle against Team Flare.
The Tower of Mastery plays a vital role in the manga, with Korrina’s grandfather Gurkinn guarding the tower until he can find someone worthy of its secrets. It doesn’t take long for these secrets to draw unwanted attention from Team Flare.
From that thrilling moment when Lucario transforms atop the tower to countless transformations across media and regions, this was a pivotal moment in Pokémon history.
Prism Tower
Lumiose City is known as the cultural hub for the Kalos region, and Prism Tower is the beating heart of the region’s most populous city. In Pokémon the Series, conquering Prism Tower becomes Ash Ketchum’s white Wailord. The moment Ash arrives in Kalos in “Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!” he visits the Lumiose Gym at Prism Tower with the intention of earning his first Gym badge. Alas, his plans are foiled when Clembot physically ejects him from the tower for not having enough Gym badges.
Ash’s vow to earn enough badges to challenge Gym Leader Clemont carries him through the remainder of Season 17 and well into Season 18 with the epic showdown finally taking place in “The Moment of Lumiose Truth!” (Season 18, Episode 19). Ash’s world might revolve around Gym battles, but Prism Tower plays a much larger role in Kalos lore, repeatedly functioning as a battleground for the soul of the city.
In “Lumiose City Pursuit!,” when Professor Sycamore’s Garchomp goes on a rampage—prompted by an attempted Team Rocket Pokémon-napping—it finds itself at the top of Prism Tower, prompting news coverage and drawing the eyes of all in Kalos to the tower.
When Team Flare finally makes its move to take over Kalos and the world, they start by occupying Prism Tower. Instead of a Gym battle, the tower becomes the site of a fierce showdown between Team Flare, led by Lysandre, and Ash and his allies.
And the tower’s dramatic history is by no means limited to the animation, as fans recently had an opportunity to experience serious hijinks at Prism Tower in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Prism Tower looms large in Pokémon TCG artwork, helping to establish Lumiose City as the setting for numerous cards. This includes many of the Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution Series expansions in which Mega Evolution, and Kalos, serve as an important theme. It’s not uncommon to see a Mawile or Fletchling seemingly posing in front of Prism Tower, or a Skarmory soaring above it. There’s even a Prism Tower Stadium card in the Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising expansion. This card is paired with Ange Floette, which can only be played after discarding a Prism Tower card already in play.
As to the question of why Prism Tower is such a lightning rod for key historical events, we could credit it to its central location—in the middle of Centrico Plaza in the middle of Lumiose City. Or perhaps it’s due to the structure’s age, as Prism Tower is the oldest building in Lumiose City, established before there even was a Lumiose City. Whatever the cause, there’s no denying Prism Tower’s cultural and historic significance to the Kalos region and, more broadly, the Pokémon world.
Battle Chateau
If Vaniville Town represents Kalos’s pastoral charm and Prism Tower embodies its combative history, the Battle Chateau captures the region’s appreciation for luxury and nobility. This castle-like structure on Route 7 offers players the opportunity to practice battling while earning luxury rewards like Pearls and Nuggets. From the Battle Chateau’s motto—“Show your strength with a title!”—to its practice of giving noble titles to members, this particular battle arena has an appreciation for the finer things in life in addition to Pokémon battles.
You might start off as a lowly Baroness or Baron, but with enough points from victorious battles, you can climb the ranks to Grand Duchess or Grand Duke. Upon entering, Lady Viola will immediately ask to know your title. Sure, it’s a little embarrassing revealing that you don’t have one, but that will quickly change.
In Pokémon the Series, the Battle Chateau has taken on a more palatial appearance, but the vibes—and emphasis on noble titles—remain the same. Ash first visits in “Breaking Titles at the Chateau!” (Season 17, Episode 20), where he battles and achieves the title of Baron, unsurprisingly becoming determined to battle his way to the top in the future.
The Battle Chateau also appears in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It shows up in the Pokémon TCG: XY—Phantom Forces expansion, behind a Girafarig standing in a stunning field of flowers. There’s no battling to be seen, and it’s unclear whether the Girafarig in question has achieved a noble title, but the Battle Chateau helps establish the location and tone of the card with its regal presence.
