Picture this – you’re me, a giant Kyle Chandler fan ever since the (highly underrated) Early Edition, and you were so excited to see him in person when you attended the Lanterns Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. That appearance didn’t disappoint – he led the crowd in reciting the Green Lantern oath, which was pretty cool – but what you didn’t know is that you might’ve been shoulder-to-shoulder with the DCU’s very own Hal Jordan on the actual con floor.
It’s not just a hypothetical, reader – both he and Lanterns costar Garrett Dillahunt were walking the Comic Con show floor, cleverly disguised in a different franchise’s garb
Chandler revealed as much during his appearance on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, where the actor expressed interest in getting a closer look at SDCC after admitting he “didn’t know anything about it.”
“So in San Diego,” Chandler explained, “Garrett Dillahunt, he and I wanted to go down on the main floor. […] So we asked, ‘Can we go on the floor?’ And they’re like ‘You can’t go on the floor!’ It’s a huge space, huge. All of these people walking around, the costumes they design and this and that and all the artists put their work up. And the merchandise, it’s huge!”
“So we asked, ‘Well, can we get masks or something?’ So they came to us at lunchtime and they brought two Stormtrooper helmets. We put them on and walked through the whole thing for like an hour. And got to see that. It was amazing.”
One of their stops was comics writer Tom King’s booth as part of the Comic Sketch Art line-up, because if you didn’t know, Tom King is also a writer/co-showrunner of Chandler and Dillahunt’s Lanterns series.
“He came to my booth yesterday in a mask… He’s like, ‘I want to see what you write,'”King relates to Inverse’s Lyvie Scott. “What a surreal experience.”
Well we’re happy for you Kyle. Still, next time you happen to be on the showfloor, give me a wave, won’t you? I gotta find out if you still get tomorrow’s newspaper today.
