How the New ‘D&D’ Video Game ‘Warlock’ Is Different From ‘Baldur’s Gate’

Our first good look at Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is here, lifting the lid on Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios’ new “third-person, single-player action-adventure set in a dark fantasy open world inspired by D&D.”

Players step into the POV of “Kaatri, an experienced warrior who makes a dangerous pact with Tasha to find someone she has lost,” reads the game’s official copy. Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Lucifer) plays Kaatri opposite Maggie Robertson (Baldur’s Gate 3) as Tasha.

“Combine forbidden magic, spells, rituals, and otherworldly weapons to open paths, create advantages, uncover secrets, and defeat monsters creatively. Venture beyond the Mists of Darkon, where danger, opportunity, and hidden power wait around every corner,” the copy continues.

Here’s the official gameplay reveal for Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons.

Speaking to Variety, the voice cast discussed the big way Warlock is different from Larian Studios’ wildly popular D&D game Baldur’s Gate 3.

“I think this game is different because we’re following one character’s story,” Robertson explained. “With Baldur’s Gate, you really got to choose your own adventure. You picked your party, and every playthrough could be completely different. Here we’re diving deeply into one character’s backstory, emotions, and motivations. That’s what makes it exciting—we’re focusing on the story and getting to know Kaatri. Warlock takes us through the relationships of these specific characters, Tasha and Kaatri. Instead of being pulled in many different directions, we’re asking players to focus on one relationship with a lot of emotional depth.”

That said, Helfer added, “You’ll still have all the fun parts of D&D. You’ll still see iconic spells, characters, and locations from D&D. I think Warlock is trying to balance being a great experience that is both accessible to newcomers and longtime fans of D&D.”

Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons is now in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. A release date has not been announced.
