The real reason why Wonder Man season 2 isn’t happening at Marvel Studios

Wonder Man was all about the making of a fictional film and the hardships that come with such a massive undertaking. Little did audiences know that a similar scenario was unfolding behind the scenes, except for a TV series.

The iconic Marvel Disney+ show was first released in January 2026 to overwhelming critical acclaim. Fans instantly fell in love with Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery—two actors looking to make it big in Hollywood despite the many obstacles standing in their way. Ultimately, stardom came for Simon, but he prioritized his friendship with Trevor instead. We were all eager to see what was in store for the future of these two beloved characters, but things didn’t go according to plan.

Marvel broke the news that Wonder Man was renewed for a second season in March 2026, but just a few months later, the studio backed down on its decision and canceled the show altogether. Understandably, fans wondered why there was a sudden change of heart, and now we finally have an answer (albeit a disappointing one).

Wonder Man season 2 was canceled due to low viewership, according to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II revealed that the show was ultimately canceled due to low viewership numbers:

“I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, for whatever reason it was, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business, and that’s the decision that we live with, and we keep on marching forward.”

According to Luminate Streaming Viewership, Wonder Man was viewed for a total of 549.6 million minutes during its first 10 days on Disney+ across all eight episodes released. On the other hand, Loki clocked 731 million minutes watched during its premiere episode alone, while Echo—another Marvel spotlight series—gathered 731 million minutes across its five total episodes.

To make things more complicated, there was a 48% drop-off in views from the premiere of Wonder Man to its finale, which means 52% of viewers who started the show didn’t actually stay around to see how it concluded. While these numbers are far from disastrous, the show was unfortunately released during a time when Marvel is looking to scale back the number of productions and have fewer yearly releases.

According to former Disney CEO Bob Iger, Marvel Studios will release, at most, three films and two shows per year. Furthermore, it has been revealed that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, X-Men ’97, and Daredevil: Born Again aim to release new seasons every year, which would surpass Marvel’s own limit of two shows per year. Taking all of that into account, it’s easy to see why Wonder Man wasn’t a major priority for the superhero giant, although simply canceling the show altogether wasn’t the right move either.

Sometimes positive word-of-mouth marketing is all that’s needed for a TV show to gain momentum after its first season. Besides, Wonder Man represented a much-needed and refreshing departure from the usual superhero content that can still falter commercially. After all, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 had a drop-off of 46% when compared to its first season, but The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is still coming back for a third season in 2027. Similarly, Thunderbolts* failed to break even at the box office, and yet it’s clear Marvel has big plans in store for the group of antiheroes, as they are set to headline Avengers: Doomsday.

There’s one silver lining: Wonder Man’s cancellation doesn’t mean Simon and Trevor will completely vanish from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, industry insider James Mack stated that Simon Williams will have a role in Avengers: Secret Wars. Perhaps the character’s appearance in big crossover projects could set him up for an eventual solo project further down the line, although it remains to be seen what exactly the future holds for Wonder Man.
