Melissa Gilbert made a passionate plea for child actors in the wake of Hayden Panettiere’s death.

Gilbert, 62, admitted that she didn’t personally know the “Heroes” actress, but took Panettiere’s death personally as she begged for industry changes in a post shared on Substack.

“Within one year, Michelle Trachtenberg, Daveigh Chase and Hayden Panettiere have died,” Gilbert wrote. “Three former female child actors of the same generation are gone. Tragically, heartbreakingly, agonizingly too soon.”

Former child actress Melissa Gilbert begged for industry changes in the wake of Hayden Panettier’s death at 36

“They are gone and the question I have been turning over and over in my head is, ‘WHY?”. Why are these three sweet, wildly talented, vibrant, vital young women gone?”

Trachtenberg died naturally of complications from diabetes mellitus in February 2025. She was 39.

Chase died in June from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), according to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office. She was 35.

“And why does this all feel so personal to me? I did not know Hayden personally and only worked briefly with Mishy and Daveigh,” she wrote. “It feels personal because I was them. As were Tatum, Kristy, Brooke, Patty, Anyssa, Dakota, Elle, Shirley, Britney, Jodie, Drew and my sister Sara, to name a few.”

Gilbert wrote that the women were “all members of the same tribe” she coined the “Female Former Child Performers,” adding that when one member dies, “it runs through all of us like an electrical current.”

“When three of us die so close together, something is very, very wrong,” Gilbert wrote before arguing that while “a combination of many factors,” could be to blame – including the invention of cellphones heightening mental health issues – the collective society should “lobby for and enact, real substantive change.”

“All I know is something has got to be done,” she wrote. “I have this image in my mind of Hayden’s little girl who will now grow up without her Mama. She is eleven years old. That’s the same age I was when my father died.”

Hayden Panettiere died in Greenville, South Carolina, on Aug. 16. She was 36

Gilbert added, “And now I am weeping as I type this and I just want to scream from the rooftops, “ENOUGH!'”

The “Nashville” actress died Aug 16 in Greenville, South Carolina. Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were with Panettiere at the time of her death, according to a police report.

Preliminary autopsy results found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death, Fox News Digital confirmed. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was contacted and is assisting in the investigation.

The “Little House on the Prairie” star’s plea came as her husband, Timothy Busfield, awaits trial on multiple counts of criminal sexual contact with a child after two boys accused him of child sexual abuse on set of the production “The Cleaning Lady.”

Busfield entered a not guilty plea in February, according to New Mexico court records reviewed by Fox News Digital. He also waived his right to an arraignment and other pretrial proceedings.

The “Thirtysomething” star, 68, surrendered to local authorities on child sex abuse charges Jan. 13. He was held without bail at the time of his arrest on two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse.

Busfield’s attorney, Larry Stein, insisted the case against his client “cannot be proven at trial” in a statement shared with Fox News Digital following his indictment.

“The indictment was not unexpected. As the saying goes, a grand jury will indict a ham sandwich,” Stein said.

The police investigation into the allegations against Busfield began Nov. 1, 2024, after a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital alerted officers about a case of alleged sexual abuse.
