From GKIDS, Hideaki Anno’s 26-episode landmark anime arrives in both Japanese and Classic English dub, alongside ‘The End of Evangelion’ and ‘Evangelion: Death (True)2;’ stream September 1.
GKIDS is bringing the classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion to The Criterion Channel September 1 in both its Japanese-language version and the Classic English dub, which streams for the first time. It joins Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Garden of Words, and K-On! The Movie on the channel.
Hideaki Anno‘s 26-episode series originally ran in Japan from 1995 to 1996. The story takes place after an apocalypse, in a world where teenagers climb into giant artificial humans – Multipurpose Humanoid Decisive Weapons, to fight beings called Angels. What begins as a mecha series ends up about identity, trauma, loneliness, and whether two people can reach each other at all.
Two companion features come with it: The End of Evangelion, directed by Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki in 1997, and Evangelion: Death (True)2, Anno’s 1998 recut, which revise and expand the series.
