Dave Lanphear was a comic book letterer, graphic designer, and art director who died unexpectedly on the 18th August at the age of 58 from complications relating to diabetes. The news was shared by his sister, Tera Lanphear, who said, “I’m sad to have to share the news of my dear older brother’s unexpected passing. For anyone who wants to reach out, feel free to contact me. The family is still deeply upset. Our peace is knowing he loved our Lord and will be reunited with our recently departed Mom. I know David was working on projects with some of you. Making a public announcement was the only way I knew to contact most of you. David knew half of the World! Born on the 5th of June, 1968, in Lansing, Michigan, Dave Lanphear began his professional creative life as a newspaper illustrator, contributing to the Turlock Journal in Northern California from 1985 to 1989. After freelancing as a letterer and occasional inker in the early 1990s, he joined the influential Comicraft studio in 1994, rising through its ranks and helping advance digital lettering techniques during a transformative period for the industry. He became known for digital lettering that often emulated classic hand-lettered styles.

In 1999, Dave Lanphear left Comicraft after being headhunted to establish and lead the lettering department at CrossGen Entertainment, where he also served as art and design director. He shaped book and page designs, letter columns, and early web comics initiatives; colleagues later credited him with giving CrossGen titles their distinctive visual polish. After CrossGen’s bankruptcy in 2004, he co-founded and managed the ArtMonkeys studio near Tampa Bay, Florida. He later partnered with Troy Peteri in A Larger World Studios and continued as a highly sought-after freelance letterer and designer. Dave Lanphear’s credits spanned Marvel, DC, Malibu, Valiant, Image, Dynamite, Red 5 Comics and more. He was Chief Creative Director of LongShot Media Group, and before his death had been planning to unveil a new company alongside other founders. He is survived by his sister Tara and his fiancée Laura Bee.
