Daniel Warren Johnson first sketched the protagonist of Chainkata, Luma, in 2017 and spent 9 years developing the story until he felt it was ready. He has described it as his most ambitious project yet, one he pushed further narratively and artistically than previous work, aiming for a science-fiction book that feels distinct. Image has marketed it pithily as “Chicks. With chainsaws. In space.” It follows Luma, a chainsaw-wielding warrior queen, travelling the vastness of space in search of an unknown power. She wants peace, but violence, terror, and conflict pursue her through black holes and cosmic dangers. The series is expected to mix large-scale, high-stakes sci-fi adventure, echoing Johnson’s Beta Ray Bill and earlier Space-Mullet, with the emotional depth and character work of titles like Extremity and Do A Powerbomb.
Daniel Warren Johnson’s notable works include Extremity, Murder Falcon, Do A Powerbomb, Transformers, The Moon Is Following Us, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, Beta Ray Bill: Argent Star and Absolute Batman Annual. Chainkata is his return to a fully creator-owned, solo-illustrated ongoing after the Transformers run. Chainkata was publicly revealed in early July ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2026 with an exclusive ashcan containing the entire first issue at the Image Comics booth… now everyone gets to have a go.
