Dark Horse Comics has revealed they will release an original Vampire Hunter D comic, Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood. Written by Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) with art by Filipe Andrade (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr), colors by Jordie Bellaire, and lettering by Frank Cvetkovic, the four-issue series will debut this December, and see the half-human, half-vampire D clash with a vampire lord laying siege to a castle.

The official synopsis says, “A vampire lord has marshalled his forces and is marching on human settlements, aiming to leave no survivors! The old fortress stands in his path to the next city, and within it is a family of outcasts who must buy enough time for humans to flee from the bloodbath. Wandering that same path is the indomitable hunter, the terrifyingly beautiful half-human, half-vampire known as D.”

Created by author Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrator Yoshitaka Amano in 1983, Vampire Hunter D is a Japanese light novel series that has been adapted into several <a href="https://comicvibe.com/anime-nyc-kodansha-licenses-long/” title=”Anime NYC: Kodansha Licenses Long”>anime and comics projects, including the 2007-10 manga by Saiko Takaki, and 2016’s crowdfunded Stranger Comics release Message from Mars.

Issue #1 will be released on December 16, with main cover art by Andrade, and variants by Riccardo Federici (The Last God), and Amano himself. Subsequent issues will have covers by Emma Rios, Dan Quintana, and Eliza Ivanova.

Dark Horse, which localizes the novels, also announced a translation of Takaki’s spin-off manga Rose Princess. Debuting June 2027, the series sees D come to the aid of a village ruled by a vampire princess, who seeks to punish its inhabitants after a young couple defies her intentions.

Additionally, Dark Horse revealed The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, the latest manga by Gou Tanabe based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Out sometime in Spring 2027, the book will retell the story of the 1941 horror novel, where Dr. Willett goes searching for the missing asylum patient of the title, who had become obsessed with his ancestor, an alchemist and occultist named Joseph Curwen.
