Wales Comic Con has been cancelled just days before this summer’s event was due to take place in Llangollen.
The two-day event at Llangollen Pavilion had been scheduled to take place on August 29 and 30.
There had been some uncertainty among fans over whether the event was still set to go ahead, with just two guests announced on social media in May.
Tickets were still available for sale from the organiser. However, there had been no updates on social media in several months and the event itself was no longer listed on the Llangollen Pavilion website.
Wales Comic Con has since confirmed with “great sadness” that this weekend’s event would no longer be going ahead.
In a statement, a spokesperson said: “This is not an announcement we ever wanted to have to make, and we know it will be incredibly disappointing for everyone who had planned to join us next weekend.
“We’d like to sincerely thank everyone at Llangollen Pavilion for their support throughout. We’ve been fortunate to work alongside a fantastic team at the venue who have always been incredibly welcoming and supportive of Wales Comic Con.
“We’d also like to thank Llangollen Railway for the enthusiasm and proactivity they’ve shown in supporting Wales Comic Con, along with Llangollen Tourist Information Centre for their support. Llangollen is a beautiful part of North Wales and we’re incredibly grateful for the welcome and support we’ve received locally.
“Most importantly, we’re incredibly sorry to everyone affected by today’s announcement. We know attending an event involves much more than simply buying a ticket, with many of you arranging travel, accommodation, time away from work and other commitments around the weekend.
“All existing ticket and booking holders will be contacted directly with further information, including the options available regarding their booking. Refund processing will begin next week. We ask that you please bear with our team while we process requests and contact everyone affected.
“Our focus now turns to what comes next for Wales Comic Con, and we’ll share further information when we’re in a position to do so. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.”
Wales Comic Con, a celebration of gaming, comics and pop culture, had been absent from North Wales for several years before returning for its homecoming event in 2022.
Last year the event moved to Llangollen Pavilion, with its two events since attracting guests from Pokémon, Red Dwarf, Jurassic Park and Harry Potter.
