Sometimes, watching a new worldunfold while witnessing the action, heartbreak, and wonder the characters experience, whether it’s in movies or TV shows, isn’t enough. We must experience it to feel the weight and effort they go through ourselves.That’s where video games come in.
Previously,I did a list of video games that would make good movies and TV shows. This time, I figured it would be fun to do the reverse. Here, we will go over many television shows and movies to determine which would make compelling video games.
Except for a few exceptions, we will not mention any movies or shows that already have video game adaptations.
Without further ado, let’s begin!
10. Kill Bill
Starting off, we have one of the most iconic action-packed movies to date.Kill Billfollows The Bride, a former member of an elite assassin group, The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, on a quest for vengeance against her former comrades. Considering that other action films like John Wick are getting video games, Kill Bill would work well too.
A hack-and-slash character action game, similar to those of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, would work perfectly for a series like Kill Bill. You could play as the Bride in her early days as the Black Mamba going on missions. We could also learn more of her relationship with her former friends.
9. Pacific Rim
Who wouldn’t want a game where you can fight giant monsters? Pacific Rim follows Raleigh Becket as he and others pilot giant robots to fight large, inhumane monsters called kaiju. With the high-octane fight scenes the film is known for, being able to play as one of the pilots.
A game could follow a similar gameplay structure to the Titanfall series, as a third-person action/shooter where you play as an unnamed pilot tasked to fight the kaiju.
Technically, there were a few mobile video games based on Pacific Rim, but a PC and console game could do very well for the market.
8. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
While the list is mainly filled with extra violent series, here we have a more light-hearted one (at least by comparison). Frieren follows the story of the titular character Frieren, an elf who goes on an adventure of self-discovery to learn what it means to appreciate the small parts of life.
Considering the nature of the series, with Frieren going around and helping people, an open-world RPG that combines the adventure and quest system of games like Witcher 3orSkyrim, with the cozy and feel-good nature of games like Witch Spring R. You play as Frieren during her early years of exploration, before the events of the show. The player could go about the world, helping citizens with various issues and collecting the grimoires she loves.
It might not be as intense as some of the other entries on this list, but it could still make for a great time.
7. The Boys
It’s a wonder this series hasn’t gotten a game before. The Boys is an elite group of normal people who set out to take down corrupted superheroes. With the series grand violence and dark humor, a video game seems perfect.
A Grand Theft Auto-style action game. The story could be a prequel to the series, where you play as a recruit of the original team as you put corrupted superheroes in their place. They could even make their own original antagonist for the player to take down.
Homlander even made an appearance in Mortal Kombat 1as a playable character in the game’s DLC, so a video game is not out of the question.
6. Firefly
Firefly is one of the cult classic series for a reason. The show follows Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds and a ragtag group of misfits who try to take on whatever the galaxy throws at them.
An open-world action game, similar to The Outer Worlds or Guardians of the Galaxy, would fit well. You play as Captain Mal as he and the crew go on a standalone adventure.
There was a plan for the series to get an MMO (massive multiplayer online) titled Firefly Online back in 2013, but it was canceled. However, with the upcoming reboot of the series, it has the potential to make it popular again, warrant more media coverage to excite old fans, and bring in new fans.
While Firefly may not have gotten lots of attention in a while, this could be a great way to restore interest in the series.
5. Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is a classic that needs no introduction. The story follows Katniss Everdeen, a young woman who must survive the deadly Hunger Games, a televised “game” in which children are forced to kill one another. Considering the upcoming release of Sunrise of the Reaping, more Hunger Gamesmedia is not out of the question.
Considering the dozens of Hunger Games that precede Katniss’ story, there are a dozen potential playable characters you can choose from. They could go in many different directions with a video game.
For instance, they could make a heavy, narrative-driven action game that blends elements from The Last of UsandUncharted, combining strong cinematic storytelling with fun shooter gameplay. They could make a choose-your-own-adventure-style game, such as Telltale’s The Walking Deadgames, to create a tense narrative where your decisions could lead to different outcomes.
Heck, they could even go for aFortnite-style battle royal video game or survival game with little story if they wanted to.
Whichever direction they choose could lead to many great experiences.
4. Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man is one of the most gruesome and action-packed series on this list. The series follows Denji, a poor teenager who fuses with his devil friend and becomes a devil hunter to live his ideal life. With the brutal violence and creative devil designs, a video game can be great fun.
Similar to Kill Bill, a character-action game would be perfect forChainsaw Man. You could play as Denji on a mission to fight a devil that has not appeared in the show. They could also make Aki and Power playable characters.
Considering the popularity of anime-styled and anime games such as Guilty Gear or Dragon Ball FighterZ, a Chainsaw Man fighting game could work as well. Just as long as they make it just as gruesome as Mortal Kombat.
3. Westworld
Westworld is a science fiction series set in a theme park where the rich act out their wildest fantasies with the robots (called Hosts) who live there…until they become self-aware. With a premise like that, a video game is a no-brainer.
An MMO could be fitting for the series’ nature, with most of the hosts acting like NPCs to begin with. Alternatively, the game could be a mix of single-player and multiplayer, like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption 2. The main story could have you play as a random Host who gains sentience, and you must figure out what to do now.
2. Peacemaker
Similar to The Boys, Peacemakeris another great example of a dark yet hilarious take on the superhero genre. The story follows Peacemaker, a crass mercenary, works with a group called Task Force X to fight off an alien invasion.
A third-person shooter is probably the best fit for Peacemaker. You could play as Peacemaker himself to right a new threat, while killing millions on the way. Characters from the show like Vigilante could be playable too.
Much like Homelander, Peacemaker was also a DLC character inMortal Kombat 1,and as a DC IP, there is a chance he gets a game someday.
Before we get to Number One, we will go through some honorable mentions. Both of these franchises have had video games in the past, but could use a new spin.
There have already been many ATLA video games, including the recently released fighting game, aptly named:Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.
However, a AAA open-world RPG would be absolutely wonderful. You could play as one of the hundreds of nameless Avatars before Aang. Something like that was planned at one point, but was canceled earlier this year.
Still, if they ever give us a chance to try again, it could be something the fans will cherish for years on end. There is a Chinese video game called The God Slayer that, from the looks of it, seems to be shaping up to be everything an Avatar game could be. If only Paramount had that much faith.
Honorable Mention: The Mandalorian
Obviously, Star Wars in general has had tons of video games of varying genres. However, an action-adventure starring the Mando himself could make for a great time. Given that the series already has the Mandalorian and Grogu go on multiple missions each episode, the story would transition perfectly into a video game plot.
They could create a gameplay system similar to Star Wars: Outlaws, as a third-person open world. You could play as Din on one of his many missions, similar to what he did in The Mandalorian and The Mandalorian and Grogumovie. That also has near-infinite potential for side quests with Mando being a bounty hunter.
They could even have sections where you play as Grogu using the Force to solve puzzles. There is much they could do.
Since there have been so many Star Wars games over the years, a game for The Mandalorian isn’t out of the question.
1. Supernatural
Last but not least, we have the longest-running show on The CW. Supernatural follows two demon-hunter brothers as they solve “supernatural” mysteries. Much like The Mandalorian, the nature of the show offers many different potential for a video game.
The series could also feature a structure similar toTelltale’sThe Walking Dead, where the player makes a variety of choices that could lead to multiple events unfolding and multiple endings.
A survival horror game in the style of Resident Evil, where you must investigate murders and survive the ghosts as either Sam or Dean.
