Vampires have been done to death in anime, but few films still cast the long shadow of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Directed by genre legend Yoshiaki Kawajiri and animated at Madhouse, the 2000 dark fantasy anime film has spent over two decades as a cult favorite, mostly kept alive through import discs.

That’s changing fast – GKIDS has picked up the movie’s North American theatrical and home video rights, with subtitled screenings landing this fall ahead of a full theatrical and home entertainment rollout in 2027.

GKIDS is proud to announce the acquisition of North American rights to VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST. 🩸

The rarely-screened gothic horror classic from Yoshiaki Kawajiri and MADHOUSE will get a full theatrical release in 2027.

Interestingly, the film made its initial theatrical release on September 23, 2001, in the US. So, without further ado, here’s everything to know about the cult classic horror anime movie and its American theatrical run in 2027.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust – A Gothic Anime That Quietly Redefined Horror Films

The movie follows D, a stoic dhampir bounty hunter caught between the human world and the fading vampire “Nobility” he was born from. He’s hired to track down Charlotte Elbourne, a young noblewoman seemingly abducted by the vampire nobleman Meier Link, only to end up racing against the Markus family, a pack of rival mercenary hunters chasing the same bounty for reasons of their own. What sounds like a straightforward monster hunt slowly turns into something far more melancholic, questioning who the real monster is once loyalty, grief, and love get tangled up in the chase across a crumbling, post-apocalyptic frontier.

Kawajiri, the Madhouse co-founder also behind Ninja Scroll and Wicked City, brought his usual mix of brutal, kinetic choreography and painterly stillness to every frame. The character designs trace back to Yoshitaka Amano’s illustrations for Hideyuki Kikuchi’s original novel, Demon Deathchase, later adapted for animation by character designer Yutaka Minowa.

That pairing is a huge reason the film still gets brought up whenever fans argue about anime’s best-looking productions, gothic western or otherwise. It’s also part of why the movie was unusually recorded in English before its Japanese dub, since the production was built from the ground up with international audiences in mind, a rarity for anime of its era. Two decades on, that ambition still shows in how confidently the film moves, mixing horseback chases, crumbling gothic mansions, and quiet, almost tender character beats without ever losing its nerve.

Why The Movie Is Finally Riding Back Into North American Theaters

The momentum behind this comeback actually started in Japan, where the movie recently received a proper restoration sourced from its original 35mm negative, complete with a theatrical revival and a remastered Blu-ray release. That same restoration is now crossing the Pacific. GKIDS has confirmed it holds both the theatrical rights and the home video rights, including Blu-ray and DVD, for North America, meaning this isn’t a one-off festival stunt but a genuine reintroduction of the film to English-speaking audiences.

Fans should expect Japanese-audio screenings with English subtitles to arrive first this fall, serving as a preview before the wider theatrical and home video release lands in 2027. For a film that’s spent years circulating mostly through secondhand DVDs, scattered streaming stints, and pricier import Blu-rays, getting a legitimate, remastered big-screen run feels genuinely overdue. It also lines up neatly with a broader wave of late-nineties and early-2000s anime being rediscovered by younger fans who missed them the first time around, from theatrical rereleases to renewed streaming pushes.

Whether you’re revisiting D’s quiet menace on the big screen or meeting him for the very first time, 2027 is shaping up to be the year Bloodlust finally gets the theatrical send-off longtime fans always felt it deserved, decades after it first carved out its place among anime’s most influential horror films. For a generation of horror and anime fans raised on grainy VHS dubs and bootleg copies, watching D ride across that ruined, gothic landscape on a cinema screen will feel like closing a very long loop.
