What if the future of anime arrives not one episode at a time, but in a movie theater with the lights off and thousands of fans watching together? Demon Slayer has already shown how powerful that model can be, turning Mugen Train into a box-office phenomenon before committing its final battle to a theatrical trilogy.

Now, Solo Leveling is taking a strikingly similar step. Its newly announced Beyond the System will continue Sung Jinwoo’s story on the big screen after Season 2. It has not changed the industry yet, but if it becomes a major hit, it could make studios rethink how blockbuster anime stories are released.

Demon Slayer’s Movie Success Gives Solo Leveling a New Path

Before Demon Slayer, anime movies were hardly new. What changed was the scale of their importance. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, released in Japan in October 2020, turned a continuation of a television anime into a theatrical event, ultimately attracting more than 41.35 million viewers worldwide and earning ¥51.7 billion globally (approx. $507 million USD; now $325.2 million USD). In Japan alone, it passed ¥40 billion and became the country’s highest-grossing film at the time.

An anime movie did not have to be a side story or a completely separate adventure. It could be the next essential chapter. The franchise subsequently doubled down on the idea. Rather than returning to television for the story’s final battle, the Demon Slayer production committee announced in July 2024 that the Infinity Castle conclusion would be released exclusively as a trilogy of theatrical films. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment were attached to distribute the films internationally.

The strategy was already visible before Infinity Castle. Demon Slayer used theatrical world-tour screenings to package the end of one arc with the beginning of another, taking special screenings to more than 145 countries and regions in 2023 and 2024. That makes Solo Leveling‘s latest move particularly interesting.

On July 3, 2026, Crunchyroll and Aniplex announced Solo Leveling: Beyond the System at Anime Expo 2026. The film is officially in production, will continue the story after Season 2, and will be animated by A-1 Pictures. Crunchyroll is co-producing it alongside Aniplex, Netmarble, D&C Media and Kakao Piccoma.

Solo Leveling is almost perfectly designed for the theatrical experience: enormous battles, rapidly escalating abilities, monsters, dungeon raids and Sung Jinwoo’s increasingly spectacular shadow army. The franchise’s first theatrical experiment, Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-, also proved that there was an audience willing to pay to see Jinwoo on the big screen. The 2024 film earned more than $6.3 million worldwide while also previewing episodes from Season 2

Solo Leveling: Beyond the System Could Push Anime Beyond TV Seasons

Unlike Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-, which primarily served as a theatrical recap and preview, Beyond the System is a new canon continuation of Sung Jinwoo’s story after Season 2. The film was announced at Anime Expo 2026 and is being produced by A-1 Pictures, with the story expected to pick up directly after the Jeju Island arc. More importantly, the movie appears to be heading into some of the most significant material in the manhwa.

The story is expected to move through the Ahjin Guild Arc, where Jinwoo establishes his own guild alongside Yoo Jinho, before reaching the Double Dungeon Arc, which could serve as the film’s major centerpiece. The latter brings Jinwoo back to the Cartenon Temple (the very place where his journey began) and finally reveals the truth behind the mysterious System that has allowed him to grow stronger.

The Double Dungeon Arc is particularly important because it is not simply another battle for Jinwoo to win. His confrontation with the Architect, Kandiaru, fundamentally changes his understanding of the System and his relationship with Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch. If Beyond the System successfully turns roughly twenty chapters of major story material into a feature film, Solo Leveling will demonstrate that an anime franchise can use cinema not merely for a recap, side story or original adventure, but to deliver essential canon material between television seasons. And that could matter far beyond Jinwoo.

That does not mean TV anime is disappearing, nor has Solo Leveling proved that movies are automatically more profitable. But if Beyond the System becomes a major box-office success, production committees will have another compelling case study for deciding how to distribute future blockbuster stories.

Demon Slayer showed that an anime movie could become a global cinematic event. Solo Leveling now has the chance to show that a movie can also become the next essential chapter of an ongoing anime.

Would you rather watch Solo Leveling’s next major arc as a movie or a full TV season? Tell us why in the comments!
