Rogue’s X-Men Movie Debut Needs One Brutal Twist: Captain Marvel Must Die!
Following D23, we now know a large chunk of the cast that will be in Jake Schreier’s X-Men (2028) film, and it includes Inde Navarrette as the iconic hero, Rogue. In the comics and animated series, she’s always been a fun, warm-hearted hero who started as a villain but quickly turned over a new leaf.
In the movies, she was a wanderer and was unfortunately treated more as a liability than a hero, with no abilities that could aid her in a fight. But with this new film, there’s a chance to change that and make a more comic-accurate Rogue that could also include the death of another hero: Captain Marvel.
Rogue And Captain Marvel Have a Fated History
Rogue and Captain Marvel are characters who lived on two totally different walks of life, but ultimately one couldn’t have existed without the other. Carol Danvers used to work with the original Captain Marvel, and when an explosion from a Psyche-Magnitron activated her powers, she became Ms. Marvel.
Rogue was a villain who worked with Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and, in an effort to prove herself, she attacked Ms. Marvel. Using her absorption abilities, she took the powers and memories of Carol Danvers, nearly killing her. This newfound power tormented Rogue’s mind, but she was still tasked with defeating the Avengers.
Meanwhile, it was Professor X who aided Carol Danvers in getting her memories back after the ordeal. It took Wonder Man’s ionic abilities to ensure Rogue maintained her enhanced abilities, such as flight. Rogue stole the powers she’s most recognized for, but she’s since managed to build a life for herself with them, as well as Carol, who regained her strength over time and various other aliases.
What Made Rogue Such a Beloved Character?
Rogue was always a mainstay in the ’90s X-Men comics, but what made her a fan favorite was her appearance in X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997). Voiced by Lenore Zann, she brought a fun Southern charm that we had only read about on the page, and her style of punching first and asking questions later was always fun to see.
She was also the strongest X-Man, physically, on the team, and she always led into fights with that, flipping Sentinels and punching bad guys with a smile on her face. But for as brutal as she was, she was also incredibly kind and easily one of the softest characters in the series. Since then, it’s been impossible to watch an X-Men show and not see Rogue on the roster in some way.
In the movies, this softness led her characterization, as she was aged much younger and, unfortunately, she didn’t play a larger role in the films, without even flying. Nevertheless, it was her popularity that got her into the movies in the first place. With X-Men ’97 (2024), Rogue has had a resurgence in popularity that will no doubt grow further once her Marvel Cinematic Universe version takes over.
Rogue Has to Meet Captain Marvel in the MCU
It’s easy to have expectations when it comes to comic book movies and shows, and there’s no better example of this than the X-Men. With a new film coming and Rogue on the roster alongside Emma Frost, Cyclops, and others, there’s a lot of lore already worth unpacking and many theories about how it could work.
In the case of Rogue, since Emma Frost is on the team, it’s not outrageous to think that Rogue could be part of the Hellfire Club or a new version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. If so, it would mean she would have to find a way to gain more power, and with Captain Marvel already in the mix, there’s a chance that could play into the story in some way.
If Rogue gains her strength and flight from Captain Marvel, it could be bad news for the hero who has been here for almost a decade. The most unfortunate part, however, is how little we’ve seen of her before being ambushed and put in a coma, or worse, killed. Nevertheless, Rogue only got her powers one way. Without a major lore shift, it’s hard to imagine the character flying and getting strong any other way, meaning Captain Marvel’s days may be numbered.

A film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) based on the Marvel Comics team. Plot TBA.
