Crystal Lake Takes Fans Back Before Jason Became a Killer
A prequel to the original Friday the 13th, Crystal Lake explores the story of Pamela Voorhees before she became the killer at the center of the 1980 slasher classic. Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela, while Callum Vinson plays young Jason Voorhees.
Crystal Lake is a prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise that explores Pamela Voorhees’ life before the events of the original film. The series follows single mother Pam Voorhees, who is struggling with grief nearly a year after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in Crystal Lake. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door investigating her past, a disturbing chain of events begins.
That setup gives Crystal Lake an opportunity to explore a part of the Friday the 13th mythology that the movies only touched on: Pamela’s life, her relationship with Jason, and the events that transformed her into one of horror’s most notorious killers.
Crystal Lake Won’t Stay Away From Slasher Horror
While the series is taking a different approach to the Friday the 13th mythology at first, creator Brad Caleb Kane has previously promised that it will eventually deliver the bloody horror fans expect. Kane has described the early episodes as incorporating elements of a paranoid conspiracy thriller and psychological drama before Pamela eventually goes “full Friday the 13th.”
He has also teased plenty of kills and promised that the series will contain numerous connections to the original movies. That includes Easter eggs and recreations of familiar elements from the franchise, although Kane has been careful not to reveal exactly what viewers should expect.
Cardellini has emphasized that she isn’t trying to simply imitate Betsy Palmer’s iconic performance as Pamela in the 1980 movie. Instead, her version of the character explores Pamela’s devotion to Jason and the grief that eventually leads her toward the woman audiences meet in Friday the 13th.
Cardellini and Vinson lead a cast that also includes William Catlett as Police Chief Levon Brooks, along with Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom.
Crystal Lake was originally ordered by Peacock in 2022, with Bryan Fuller attached as writer and showrunner. Fuller later departed the project in 2024, with Kane taking over creative duties.
The series has already generated significant international interest. Warner Bros. Discovery acquired Crystal Lake for HBO Max across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, while Sky and NOW will carry the series in the UK and Ireland. The series has also been selected for the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
Now Friday the 13th fans have New York Comic Con to look forward to as well. The wait to return to Crystal Lake is almost over.
