Streaming platforms have delivered some of the best shows over the last couple of months, and August has been no exception. From brand-new originals to returning favorites, a slew of great content has dropped in August that fans everywhere need to check out.
However, there have also been some sneaky successes that anyone would enjoy, and there are three specific shows that are perfect for a weekend binge or maybe even a couple of weeks.
Sterling Point (Prime Video)
The first series I have to give some props to isSterling Pointover on Prime Video. The series is an original show that runs for eight episodes and is the kind of series you can binge in a day and totally forget what time it is. It’s a total must-watch show.
Created by Megan Park, the series follows a teenager having a rough time after she doesn’t get into the prestigious academic camp she wanted for the summer. But one day, she learns that she and her twin brother have suddenly inherited an island from their estranged grandfather, who recently passed away. To figure out what is going on, she investigates and travels there to uncover secrets about her past and her family’s ties to it.
The series stars Ella Rubin and Amelie Hoeferle as Annie and Ramona, and their chemistry is one of the perks that makes the show so great. But if you’re looking for a series that has pure drama and will capture you from the moment it starts, this is the one.
There’s been a lot of talk of a potential season 2 as well, and considering there are a decent number of cliffhangers and unresolved plots after the finale (like a love triangle), it would be great to check it out. All eight episodes are available to stream on Prime Video.
Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount Plus)
While Special Ops: Lioness(also just called Lioness)has already been around for a couple of years, the series has become a mainstay on Paramount Plus and has continued to gain traction over its three seasons. The series, starring Zoe Saldana, is a spy thriller about badass women enlisted by the CIA as undercover operatives in the war on terror.
If you think you’re going to get action with this, you are correct. If you think you’re going to get amazing acting, you are also correct. If you think the effects will be banging, you are right on the money and correct once again. Lionessis honestly very underappreciated because the time and effort that goes into each season only increases as the story goes on.
I have to give some props also to Saldana as Joe McNamara because, wow, I already love her as a kick-butt character in the Avatarseries and as Gamora in the MCU, but seeing her in this? It’s amazing. It’s like a grounded version of all of her previous characters but so much better. The series also has Morgan Freeman as the Secretary of State, and I, for one, think that makes this show ten times more worth watching.
One Hundred Years of Solitude (Netflix)
The last sneaky show I want to bring up is One Hundred Years of Solitudeon Netflix.Based on the novel of the same name, One Hundred Years of Solitudeis a magical realist show that mainly focuses on the fictional town of Macondo and the people who run it, the Buendía family. The story follows several generations and the downfall of their rule over the town. It premiered in December 2024.
With two seasons, the second of which will conclude with its final episodes premiering on Aug. 26, 2026, this series is perfect for those who want an authentic representation of Spanish culture but also want a little bit of magic and introspection in their lives. The series talks about themes of social class, taboo nature, and much more. There are also plenty of interesting magical moments, like interactions with the beyond, strange coincidences that alter the course of the story, and instances that should make people confused, but most don’t care that much.
This series has a lot going for it because it’s so different. I think international shows often have the best adaptations, and this one is no different.
Any one of these shows will be an absolute blast. The next time you want to binge, you won’t have to look too far.
