Johnny Depp is in talks for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

The 63-year-old actor last played Captain Jack Sparrow in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – the lowest-grossing film in the franchise – but he is set to reprise the role for a sixth time in the upcoming film.

Speaking at D23, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Deadline: “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”

However, insiders told the outlet that Johnny’s character won’t be the main focus of the next film, with a new face, played by Margot Robbie, set to take centre stage in what was described as an “evolution of the franchise”.

Bruckheimer had previously addressed speculation the story would focus on Margot’s character and Captain Jack’s son.

Asked if fans are onto something with the theory, he coyly told <a href="https://comicvibe.com/zee-entertainment-sat-allows-preferential-warrant-issue-to-promoter-group/” title=”Zee Entertainment: SAT Allows Preferential Warrant Issue To Promoter Group”>Entertainment Tonight: “They’re close on part of it.”

Pressed on whether he means the Margot side of it, he added: “I think you’re going up the right road.”

He did confirm that the team have had a conversation with the Barbie star, and that they “love Margot”.

Meanwhile, Margot previously suggested her film had been shelved, but in October last year, Bruckheimer insisted she was “still involved” in Pirates 6 in some capacity.

He added that franchise veteran Ted Elliott has been involved in the current script.

He told The Wrap: “We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out and we kind of went with the other one…[Elliott] worked on it, and we’ve brought someone else in to fill in the blanks.”

Meanwhile, Gore Verbinski — who directed the first three Pirates films — recently insisted he has no plans to return to the saga.

He told ScreenRant: “I wish them the best. I just don’t have anything. I feel like I did three and, for me, it was a great opportunity to learn and to try something.

“I think we have to be at a place where the wheels are about to fall off. I think once you kind of know how to do something, it becomes less interesting or less dangerous.

“There’s just so little time, and there are so many stories to tell.”

Orlando Bloom – who portrayed Will Turner in the original trilogy – recently teased “maybe there’s a world where we get the band back together” for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

He told Deadline: “I do think that people are really responding to nostalgia in a way at the moment.

“There’s something about stepping into the world of artificial intelligence and superintelligence, where we’re kind of harking back to nostalgic times and movies that had that.

“Maybe there’s a world where we get the band back together.”

However co-star Keira Knightley – who played Will Turner’s lover Elizabeth Swann – has firmly ruled out returning to Pirates of the Caribbean.

She explained to People: “You know I think my pirating days are over.

“I think I definitely spent many years doing that and, you know, it was amazing and I’m very pleased to have been a part of that, but I suspect that my swashbuckling days are done.”
