Twitch faces ‘furious’ streamer backlash as Amazon AI training opt-out appears enabled by default
Twitch is facing criticism after a new setting appeared to allow Amazon to use streamer channel content to train generative AI models. The setting is turned on by default, meaning streamers have to change their privacy settings if they do not want their content used for this type of training. The issue came to light on August 12, 2026, when livestreaming reporter Zach Bussey shared details of the new option. Twitch later responded, saying the platform itself is not training GenAI models on streamer content, while confirming that the setting relates to Amazon’s generative AI training.

Why are Twitch streamers angry about the new Amazon AI training
    setting?

Zach Bussey said streamers can “opt out of some training” through the “security and privacy” settings on their channels. The new option is called “training for generative AI” and includes this description:“Allow your channel content to train generative AI content models at Amazon. Turning this off does not opt you out of Twitch and Amaz0on using your channel content for other purposes described in the Twitch Privacy Notice, including using AI-supported Twitch features that benefit the community by facilitating streamer growth and monetization (such as real-time sponsorship campaign assistance), viewer discovery (such as recommendations), and community safety (such as AutoMod).”The wording drew criticism because the setting was enabled by default. Users questioned why creators were not asked to actively agree before their content could be used for AI training. The reaction included strong comments on X.“Twitch keeps giving me reasons to hate it oh my gosh i feel vindicated” X user @NotFromStlouis commented.“You have to be a real scumbag to do this @Twitch. You KNOW if you asked for permission EVERYONE would say no. So you did what you knew would be denied if you asked permssion and you made it opt-out; just like every scumbag lacking scruples.” X user @HexerStoner remarked.“Why would they make it on by default?” X user @Soldi3rOfD wrote.“I will never understand the need of every billion dollar corporation that owns a social/entertainment platform to integrate AI or AI training into there applications. Like seriously who does this benefit in any meaningful capacity outside of advertisers…oh wait there it is.” X user @L4teSubmission stated.

What did Twitch say about training streamer content for generative AI?

Twitch responded to the criticism on August 12, saying, “Just want to be clear. This lets you opt out of Amazon’s Generative AI content model training. Twitch is not training GenAI models on streamer content.”The response, however, received an X Community Note pointing out the relationship between the two companies: “Twitch Interactive Inc. and its affiliates are subsidiaries of Amazon.com, Inc. (“Amazon”).”The distinction is important. Twitch says it is not itself training the models, while the setting allows Amazon to use eligible Twitch channel content for generative AI training unless a streamer opts out. The option is available under Twitch’s Security and Privacy settings.
