Second season of Netflix’s SEC docuseries is on ice, for now

The SEC’s foray into reality-TV-style football coverage is on pause at least for now, even as the conference insists the door isn’t closed for good.

According to Front Office Sports, the streamer won’t produce a second season of SEC Football: Any Given Saturdayin time for this fall, though the conference isn’t ruling out a future return. A spokesperson told the outlet the plan from the start was to run one season and then evaluate, though no filming for a second season has taken place to date

If you recall, not every SEC program was willing to hand a camera crew keys to its locker room, as six of the conference’s 16 schools—including Georgia and Texas — opted to withhold access to the same production company behindFormula 1: Drive to Survive. That left the production leaning heavily on programs with less leverage to say no, South Carolina chief among them. A school spokesperson told FOS the exposure was worth the internal disruption it caused, though the school notably wouldn’t commit to doing it a second time.

Any future South Carolina commitment would presumably need sign-off from Emily Beamer, too. Shane Beamer’s wife’s cookies might be “the freaking bomb,” as her husband put it, but that didn’t stop viewers of the show’s fifth episode from informing her that she wasn’t baking them long enough.

Whatever’s keeping the holdouts away, it’s almost certainly not the fear that the internet will pick apart a coach’s spouse’s baking acumen. But it’s fair to guess that story didn’t exactly help recruit anyone new, either.

If anything, it’s about control, and college football coaches are notorious for wanting it over every corner of their program, down to who talks to the media and when. Six schools had already decided before that a full season of cameras inside practices, meetings, and coaches’ homes wasn’t worth surrendering that control. Even a level of oversight like the one Baker Mayfield negotiated for Peyton Manning’s Quarterback — where he got to review and approve his own footage before it aired — wasn’t enough to get every SEC program on board. Getting them, or anyone else, to say yes a second time means asking for that same surrender all over again.

That’s a lot of oversight to negotiate and a lot of control to give up for a show that still landed at 780th out of roughly 7,700 titles in Netflix’s H2 2025 engagement report, drawing about 3 million views across its seven-episode run, per FOS. For comparison’s sake, Season 2 of Quarterback finished well ahead of it at 343rd, with 5.6 million views over a comparable stretch.

Modest numbers haven’t scared other teams and conferences off the format, though. Notre Dame is already multiple seasons deep into its own version, Peacock’s Here Come the Irish, while Paramount+ is reportedly building something similar around Texas Tech. Whether the SEC ends up following that lead, sitting this format out for good, or landing somewhere in between remains to be seen. But for now, at least, docuseries might just mean more to schools outside the SEC.
