The ultimate nerd fever dream is becoming a reality.

In an exclusive reveal Disney, Marvel Comics, and Lucasfilm have announced the crossover fans have speculated about for decades: Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles

Launching in January 2027 as a five-issue monthly miniseries, the blockbuster event brings characters from a galaxy far, far away directly into the heart of Marvel’s Earth-616 universe. Spearheaded by pop-culture icon Kevin Smith (Daredevil, Clerks) alongside superstar artist David Marquez (Civil War II, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man), the miniseries serves as the flagship centerpiece celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Wars.

The Premise: A New Hope Meets Earth-616

Rather than taking place in an isolated alternate reality or non-canon sandbox, Hope Assembles anchors the galaxy far, far away directly into mainline Earth-616 lore.

The story kicks off when a reality-shattering spell causes the foundational events of 1977’s A New Hope to unfold directly on Earth, bringing Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Han Solo face-to-face with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Teased character pairings across the five issues include Luke Skywalker teaming up with Captain America, Chewbacca trading blows alongside the Incredible Hulk, and Black Widow navigating imperial espionage alongside Princess Leia.

The five-issue run will release monthly from January through May 2027, wrapping up just in time for May the 4th (Star Wars Day) and the theatrical re-release of A New Hope.

Kevin Smith and Lucasfilm on the Historic Crossover

For writer Kevin Smith, taking the reins on the first official Marvel/Star Wars crossover fulfills a childhood dream four decades in the making.

Kevin Smith on Realizing a Dream:

Back in the early ’80s, I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga. So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand! I’m ecstatic to be writing Hope Assembles for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars! Many thanks to Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm for trusting me to fly the Falcon and the Quinjet!

Michael Siglain (Lucasfilm Publishing Creative Director) on the Event’s Scale:

With Hope Assembles, Kevin Smith has written a true love letter to Star Wars, to Marvel, and to comics in general,” Siglain said. “And combined with David Marquez’s incredible art, we’ll see the heroes and villains of Star Wars team up and battle with the heroes and villains of Earth-616. Hope Assembles is exciting, unpredictable, and heartfelt. In short, it’s comics at its best, and we can’t wait for readers to experience both franchises as never before.

While Marvel published the original Star Wars comic adaptations beginning in 1977 and reclaimed the publishing license under Disney in 2015, the two properties have always maintained strict editorial division. A direct narrative crossover between Earth-616 heroes and Star Wars icons represents one of the largest publishing swings in modern comic history, echoing legendary company-wide events like JLA/Avengers.

Whether you want to see Doctor Doom try to commandeer the Death Star or watch Spider-Man trade quips with Han Solo, Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles is setting up to be a massive commercial smash when issue #1 lands this January.
