Jodie Sweetin is detailing her recovery following gum graft surgery.
The Full House alum spoke about the dental procedure on her and Andrea Barber‘s How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast on Tuesday, admitting she felt like she “got hit in the mouth with a baseball bat” for a few days.
“Your whole face is swollen,” she told Barber at the top of the episode. “I had a black eye and the cheek down here was all kind of swollen and bruised, so yeah.”
Although she didn’t explain why she underwent the surgery gum grafting is “a dental procedure for treating thinning gums or gum recession.” Medical professionals use grafts to cover “exposed teeth roots” and add volume to the gum line to improve overall oral health. The procedure can also reduce the risk of severe gum disease
“It was all great,” Sweetin said of her surgery, which she had on her upper mouth. “Everything is healing really lovely. In my personal, non-professional opinion, it looks great! If I think it looks okay, I feel we should be all right.”
Sweetin told Barber that she’s been wearing a retainer for two weeks to “keep all the sutures and stuff clean on the roof of my mouth,” even when she eats.
“But I get them out tomorrow,” she added, “and then I’ll be free to go.”
“Well, mostly free to go,” Sweetin quickly noted. “I still have some gentle tooth brushing and no sandwiches or sourdough rolls in my future. Nothing I have to bite into that’s hard—anything that really requires the canine teeth. Got to give them a little more time [to heal].”
This is reportedly Sweetin’s second graft surgery. She mentioned during the podcast that she previously had the procedure done on the lower part of her mouth, as well. Sweetin admitted that, thankfully, she could talk more post-surgery this go-around.
“I actually didn’t have to be as concerned about talking as I did when it was on the bottom front of my mouth,” she explained. “That was when I really had to be careful because your lower jaw is the only thing that moves, therefore, your bottom lip is constantly moving back and forth over your jaw as it moves when you’re talking. That doesn’t happen as much with your upper lip. So, I could talk. Thank God.”

Barber was glad to hear that news, knowing how much her former costar loves to chit-chat. She even sent Sweetin some soups and treats from Spoonful of Comfort to ease the pain of recovery.
Sweetin thanked Barber for the “great, wonderful gift,” which she truly appreciated as she “didn’t know how this [surgery] would go.”
“It was great, it was delicious, it made me feel loved, [and now] I have my little get-well spoon,” Sweetin said.
Sweetin and Barber have been close pals since playing Stephanie Tanner and Kimmy Gibbler, respectively, on Full Housefrom 1987 to 1995 andFuller House from 2016 to 2020.
They just attended Nostalgia Con with their fellow cast members John Stamos, Dave Coulier, and Lori Loughlin in Orlando, Fla., over the weekend.
“Had the best time at @thenostalgiacon at @disneyparks with my Full House fam!” Sweetin wrote on Instagram alongside photos from the event.
