The next Disney attraction to make the jump from the parks to the screen could end up being EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth. Disney+ has given the green light for a pilot of a series that would be based on the classic Walt Disney World Resort attraction.
A logline for the series was also shared. It reads as follows:
When a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes awry, a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself.
The pilot will be directed by and executive produced by Lee Toland Krieger (You, Riverdale, Shadow & Bone). Jason Fuchs will be the showrunner and executive producer via Five Ten Productions. Michael Waldon will also be executive producing under his Anomaly Pictures banner. Adam Fishbach (Love, Victor, The Other Black Girl) is also an executive producer. Adam Fasullo of Anomaly Pictures is also an executive producer. 20th Television will produce, where both Anomaly and Fishbach are under overall deals.
At this point, casting is underway for the pilot and potential series. The story for this potential series would loosely fit with the storyline of Spaceship Earth. Through all its incarnations, it has told the story of history in different ways, mainly by focusing on the history of communications from the early history of man up through the advent of the internet currently.
If this pilot goes to series, it will get further than some others that have been in development in recent years. This includes interconnected series based on The Magic Kingdom and another based on the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. None of these made their way to the screen. In general, Disney has had more success by taking attractions and making them into movies. They have had mixed results here as well. The most successful is the Pirates of the Caribbeanfilms. Others that have made the leap from the parks to the silver screen include the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and even the Country Bear Jamboree.
