K-pop Study Finds 45% of Groups Disband Within 3 Years of Debut
A 30-year census of 1,182 acts emphasizes how K-pop is a high-risk market where less than 2% of groups achieve million-seller status despite massive debut costs.

Highlights
- According to a study, nearly half of K-pop groups disband within three years, with an average lifespan of 4.12 years despite a standard seven-year contract.
- Only 3.55% of K-pop acts reached the album sales threshold needed to recover debut investments, the research noted.
- The report states popular groups mainly come from major agencies and also revealed how boy groups last longer than girl groups.
A 30-year study of South Korea’s music sector since the H.O.T era reveals a painful truth: nearly 45% of K-pop groups disband within three years of debut, which is well short of the industry’s standard seven-year contract. As per research, the upfront launching cost of an idol group is somewhere between ₩5 billion to ₩10 billion (~ $3.5 million to $7.0 million USD), nevertheless, only a minor fraction of acts produce enough sales volume to break even.
The study, authored by Sungshin Women’s University professor Kim Jeong-seop, was published in the Journal of the Korea Entertainment Industry Association. Notably, the research followed 1,182 idol groups who debuted during the 1996 to 2025 period. The census shows an average of 39.4 groups entered the market annually in the three-decade period, making a cluttered ecosystem identified by steep early turnover and revenue concentration at the top.
An Early ‘Death Valley’ for Many K-pop Debutants
The average active lifespan throughout all studied groups was 4.12 years, which is 58.9% of the usual seven-year contract length of the industry. Notably, the three-year survival rate stood at 55.03%, beyond which sustainability drops further. Only 36.6% of groups remain active at five years, while just 17.9% reach the 10-year mark.
Kim Jeong-seop, the main researcher in the study, noted that the initial one to three years are the operational “death valley” for theseK-pop groups. This is because agency capital commitments rely directly on early fandom formation and commercial response. Therefore, if an act fails to gain traction in the first hit, they might experience reduced funding, prompting premature disbandment after year three.

Despite a steep 45% early drop-out rate, launching a K-pop group is statistically safer in its first three years (because of its 55.03% survival rate) than opening a usual South Korean small business, which carries a 41.5% chance for success. Without state subsidies, however, entertainment ventures still trail behind government-backed startups, where 68.1% of companies hit the three-year mark.
Boy Groups Command More Revenue in K-pop?
According to the study, there is a clear longevity gap that exists between the two widely popular gender categories. The report says that boy groups averaged 5.11 years of activity, an increased margin when compared to the girl groups, who averaged 3.13. This gap provides the boy groups an extra hand in revenue margin by nearly two years.
However, boy groups usually rely on dedicated fan bases that bolster high physical album and merchandise sales. Girl groups, on the other hand, depend more on general public recognition, digital streaming revenues, and live event bookings, thus offering them faster audience turnover.
Extreme Capital Concentration at the Top of the K-pop Industry
Due to this uneven nature of the industry, an equilibrium point remains ever elusive for many fresh entrants in the market. Just 42 acts, which represent 3.55% of the total figure, hit the 300,000-unit single-album sales mark. Notably, this threshold is considered a requirement to cover the costs of production and marketing for them.
Nevertheless, a few of them still cross into major profitability. The top 19 groups (the cream 1.61% layer) achieved single-album sales above one million units. An even superior, elite cohort of eight groups, including BTS, Seventeen, Stray Kids, EXO, TWICE, NCT, Tomorrow X Together, and ENHYPEN, crossed the 10M mark in cumulative album sales.

It is worth noting that 0.68% of all acts launched since 1996, each and every member of the 10-million-unit club, was created by a major agency like HYBE, SM Entertainment, or JYP Entertainment. According to the study, although the industry is structurally a high-risk one, re-evaluating risk models while growing shared infrastructure could help small and mid-sized agencies to build long-term sustainability.
