Halo makes its PlayStation debut, but the remake’s July launch sputters with just 351K units sold on PS5. However, the Call of Duty: Black Ops ports sold incredibly well.

Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics has shared the Top 10 best-selling games on PlayStation 4 and 5 this past month, which saw Microsoft’s games dominating the chart, albeit with very different sales performances.

The big surprise of July 2026 was the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II on PS4 and PS5. Fans had long wanted the 2010 and 2012 hits on the newer PlayStation platforms, but perhaps even Activision did not expect this level of success. According to Alinea, the impact of these mere ports (priced at $40, although PS Plus subscribers can grab them for $20 until tomorrow) was nothing short of “nuclear“: the two games sold 11.2 million units combined, with Black Ops II taking the lion’s share (8.2 million units).

In revenue, that’s about $435 million generated by two old ports in less than a month. Excellent news for Microsoft, although Sony is certainly happy, too, having received a bonus $130 million due to its well-known 30% platform fee.

It was a nostalgia-bound month for PlayStation gamers, who also reacted positively to the launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Ubisoft’s game sold 1.6 million units on PS5 in July, grabbing the third spot in the Top 10 best-selling chart of the month. The rest of the chart includes sports games (EA FC 26, EA College Football 27), evergreen titles (Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft), the newly released Palworld, and, lastly, Halo: Campaign Evolved.

A bar chart titled 'July’s top PlayStation games by copies sold' shows 'Call of Duty: Black Ops II' leading with 8.2M copies.

The latter game deserves a deeper analysis. This is a proper remake and the first time the Halo franchise has made it on PlayStation, and yet it only sold 351K units in July. That makes Halo: Campaign Evolved the (unhappy) other side of Microsoft’s coin, though the game didn’t just perform poorly on PS5, it also struggled on its core platforms: Steam sold 212K copies, and Xbox (between console and the Xbox app) around 900K.

That’s fewer than 1.5 million units; what’s even worse is that the game had few competitors. With the franchise’s roadmap reportedly still up in the air, the future of the Halo franchise looks rather cloudy.
