Square Enix details loading times issue with Final Fantasy 14 on Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix has identified a loading times issue with the just-released Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14.

The company says that “loading times may take longer than usual when screen goes dark within the content.” An update is planned to address the issue.

It seems that the origin of the problem stems from entering “a content area while surrounded by a large number of characters”. Square Enix says that “in some cases, the data reloading and cache clearing processes required for safe rendering are taking an extended amount of time.” The upcoming update will further improve optimization.

The full notice regarding Final Fantasy 14’s Nintendo Switch 2 loading issue is as follows:

We have confirmed that in the Nintendo Switch 2 version, loading times may take longer than usual when screen goes dark within the content.

Our investigation has confirmed that when players enter a content area while surrounded by a large number of characters, loading times within that content take longer than usual from the moment they enter until they exit. When this issue occurs, the delay is particularly noticeable in the following situations:

・When the screen fades to black during a battle phase transition or when you are teleported to a different map within a dungeon
・When the screen fades to black upon revival after being defeated within a dungeon
・When the screen fades to black after using Warp or the Aethernet within a dungeon

Regarding this issue, we have confirmed that in some cases, the data reloading and cache clearing processes required for safe rendering are taking an extended amount of time. We have therefore further optimized these processes to ensure faster data loading even under similar conditions, and we are currently testing the updated program.

We are working to release an update as soon as possible to address this and several other issues, so we ask for your patience until the issue is resolved.

Final Fantasy 14 is up on the Nintendo eShop. We have information about subscription fees, a perk for Nintendo Switch Online members, and more here.
