PlayStation’s decision to reduce PS5 disc production in early 2028 has sparked protests. Most notably, the <a href="https://www.change.org/p/don-t-kill-the-disc-tell-sony-to-keep-physical-playstation-games” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Don’t Kill the Disc petition started strong and has garnered over 355,000 signatures. Still, Insider Gaming highlighted how the rate of signups has declined. Meanwhile, Sony announced it would not reconsider despite criticism.

After launching on July 1st, it didn’t take much more than a week for the Change.org campaign to reach the 300,000 mark. However, since then it’s only attracted around another 55,000 gamers.

    Will discs survive?

The PlayStation petition has still spread the word about the advantages of physical games. Its creators insist that Sony’s anti-consumer move impacts not just collectors. As the PS Store becomes more influential, diminished competition may lead to higher prices.

Retailers that depend on walk-in customers are at risk. Some of these stores also stock used PS5 discs, an option that disappears with the GTA 6 code-in-box option. Buyers will be unable to sell or trade their purchases later, further straining budgets.

The decline in activity for Don’t Kill the Disc may reflect a pattern seen during other protests. They often receive the bulk of their media attention when debuting. In recent weeks, the Change.org movement has faced mounting competition, such as the PSBlackout, that has enjoyed recognition. Its sponsors are asking gamers to boycott consoles and the PlayStation ecosystem for 7 days.

    Sony is not budging

Sony might argue that the petition has already reached everyone passionate about protecting physical games. In its July 31st Q1 FY2026 earnings report, the company revealed that 82% of game sales are digital. CFO Lin Tao acknowledged some fans’ unhappiness but remains confident in the strategy of printing fewer PS5 discs.

Critics question the statistics, noting that they include titles available exclusively on the PS Store. If consumers aren’t given a Blu-ray-based alternative, buyer preference isn’t accounted for.

On the gaming giant’s social media accounts, there are no signs that protesters are wavering. Every marketing effort continues to be sidetracked by complaints unrelated to the subject. Physical media defenders believe that as Sony’s partners grow frustrated, the company will offer a compromise.
