Disney+ will no longer proceed with a second season of Marvel’s Wonder Man, reversing the renewal announced earlier this year. The streamer confirmed in March that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley would return, but the series will now end after one season.
According to reports, a writers’ room was never opened for Season 2, despite Marvel publicly saying that the next chapter was in development. The show’s writers have now been released to pursue other projects.
Abdul-Mateen starred as Simon Williams, an aspiring Hollywood actor who crosses paths with Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery while pursuing a role in director Von Kovak’s new superhero film. The eight-episode series combined its Marvel story with a behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry and the friendship that develops between two actors at very different points in their careers.
The cast included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Oli as showrunner and Cretton directing the opening episodes
Wonder Man received strong reviews following its January premiere. Abdul-Mateen also earned an Emmy nomination for his performance as Simon. The series briefly appeared in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 during its opening week, although Disney did not release its own viewing figures.
The cancellation leaves Wonder Man following the largely single-season format of Marvel’s live-action Disney+ shows. Loki and Daredevil: Born Again remain the main exceptions to receive additional seasons, although WandaVision has continued through connected projects including Agatha All Along and the upcoming VisionQuest. Reports indicate that Simon, Trevor and other characters introduced in Wonder Man could still return elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For CultureCues, this is disappointing news, especially after Disney+ had already announced a renewal and given fans every reason to expect a second season. It is a shame to see Wonder Man join the growing list of Marvel shows ending after one season. Although Simon and Trevor will not return for another chapter of their own, we hope this is not the last time we see them in the MCU.
All eight episodes of Wonder Man are streaming now on Disney+.
