VisionQuest: What to remember about the Vision before the Marvel Cinematic Universe series arrives on Disney+

The show follows up on story threads from Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision

Marvel Studios’ upcoming VisionQuest will give fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe the next chapter in the ongoing story of synthetic Avengers hero The Vision (Paul Bettany). Under the guidance of showrunner Terry Matalas, VisionQuest will follow up on storylines from Avengers: Infinity War, WandaVision and other MCU stories. So, what do you need to remember in advance of the debut of VisionQuest?

    Who is The Vision?

The Vision’s backstory begins in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which the artificial intelligence Ultron (James Spader) created The Vision as a synthetic body for him to inhabit powered by the Infinity Stone. However, he was thwarted by Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), who uploaded Stark’s in-armor A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. into the body, allowing him to become his own individual; J.A.R.V.I.S. chose the name Vision once in his new form, and fought against Ultron, turning the tide against him. Vision subsequently joined the Avengers and fought alongside them; he also began a relationship with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), another new recruit to the team.

How did the Vision die in Avengers: Infinity War?

The Vision served with the Avengers for a brief period, before the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War split the team in two and left the Vision and Maximoff on different sides of the schism. Wanda goes into hiding after escaping from imprisonment, but she and Vision continue their relationship in secret for years. However, in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, the Vision was killed when Thanos (Josh Brolin) ripped the Infinity Stone from his forehead. He notably died before Thanos’s ‘snap,’ meaning that he was not resurrected at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

How did the Vision return in WandaVision?

In 2021’s Disney+ series WandaVision, Wanda unconsciously used her reality-warping powers to resurrect Vision. Unfortunately, this incarnation of Vision was only able to exist inside the Hex, an unsustainable spell. During the time the Hex was in place, Wanda and Vision had two children, Tommy and Billy. Meanwhile, government agency S.W.O.R.D. rebuilt and reactivated the original Vision’s body, resulting in an all-white incarnation of the character which lacked the original Vision’s personality and memories.

In the climactic episode of WandaVision, Wanda’s Vision spoke with the reactivated Vision, re-igniting the android’s humanity, and the reactivated Vision flew off to parts unknown. This new Vision – specifically not the original – is who will appear in VisionQuest: a version of the character who is unsure about his identity, his purpose, and his family… but who knows that he is more than he was originally intended to be.

It should be mentioned that, in 2024’s Agatha All Along, Wanda and Vision’s child Billy was reincarnated as a teenager (Joe Locke). Over the course of that series, Billy performed a spell that reincarnated his brother Tommy as a teenager (Ruaridh Mollica) as well. Whether that will play into VisionQuest remains to be seen.

VisionQuest will debut on Disney+ on October 14th, 2026.
