UploadVR regularly publishes articles written by freelance writers. If you want to write articles for us, here’s what you need to know:

In our regular work, we often consider proposals from freelance writers. As representatives across the XR media spectrum, our goal is to provide expertise across VR/AR/MR, original reporting, fresh perspectives, and other insightful and informative articles. The biggest stories and games will be covered by our in-house staff, but we also welcome suggestions elsewhere.

That being said, here are some important details to keep in mind.

    How to sell by email

Here are some general guidelines we recommend you follow when pitching an UploadVR.

Clearly label your email subject as a pitch – To avoid your email getting lost, it’s a good idea to add “Pitch:” to your email subject, usually mentioning the game name. Include headings – Headings ultimately reflect the broader content of the article. We’d love to know what game this is referring to and what’s the hook in your work. We don’t have a strict character limit, so it doesn’t have to be too short, but we also don’t want headings to read like whole paragraphs. Headings do not need to be included in the subject line as long as they are included in the body of the article. Pitch Overview – How do you plan to execute your pitch? Summarize your point of view, how you intend to approach the article, and the structure you plan to follow. Be concise – If you need four or five paragraphs to explain your proposal, you may want to restructure your content. There is no need to explain every individual aspect as long as you keep the important points in mind. Brevity is an art form in itself. Ideally, when sending an email, keep your pitch to no more than 1-2 paragraphs. Sell us your idea – This really boils down to two points. Why are you the best person to tell this story, and why do you believe this story will be of interest to your audience? Don’t use generative AI – Don’t use generative AI to craft email pitches in any form. Very obviously, we do not respond to these emails. This will have a significant impact on our ability to work with you. We also reserve the right to remove articles written using generated AI without prior disclosure. Link to previous work – If you haven’t worked together before, include a link to your author profile in your portfolio, personal blog, or other medium. We welcome collaborations with new authors, but it’s always helpful to have samples of previous work.

    Where to send your pitch

There are two ways to submit your pitch. Although our contact page will be sent to the entire team, we usually recommend that you email editor David Heaney directly.

    David Heaney: dheaney@uploadvr.com

You can also use our general inbox, tips@uploadvr.com, which sends them to our broader editorial team. However, we generally recommend that you contact the editor directly. Because your inbox is where we encourage readers, developers, publishers, PR, and more to send you relevant news articles and updates.

What we are interested in commissioning

Original Reporting and Interviews – If you have an interesting story that speaks directly to a variety of sources, we’re always happy to hear your pitch. If you’re proposing an interview for a game that’s not available to the public, ideally you’ll need to experience the game in person first. Community-driven features – Do you have interesting stories to share about existing VR communities? Whether it’s social VR platforms like VRChat or more traditional multiplayer games, we’re interested in hearing these stories. Reviews, Testimonials, Previews – Reviews and Testimonials are the most commonly requested articles by UploadVR. We work with existing freelance writers, but if you’re particularly interested in a niche genre, we’d love to hear from more of you.

What we don’t want right now

Not related to VR/MR/AR/XR – It may sound obvious, but we regularly receive proposals that have nothing to do with the XR industry. We won’t cover traditional games unless the game has VR support or something other than XR technology. If your pitch is only peripherally related to XR, we probably won’t accept it. Editorials – While we welcome unique perspectives, editorials (not interview-driven) about big games or new hardware are primarily things that UploadVR wants to keep on staff. Q&A Interviews – While we welcome interview pitches, we do not want these features to be presented in a standard Q&A format. Here are some examples of the approaches we recommend. Stories you’ve already written – This rule is mainly to avoid wasting time. Editors may agree to your suggestions but also request a change in approach, which may require a major rewrite if you’ve already completed the article. If you need guidance, we’re always looking to help shape these stories. Web3/Cryptography/Generative AI/Gambling Articles – In the past UploadVR has covered how some XR apps use generative AI, but this is not the subject we ask.

    Fee

As of December 13, 2025, UploadVR will pay the following USD fees for these types of articles with the following recommended word counts:

News – $50 (200-300 words) Previews/Impressions – $150 (500-700 words) Reviews – $250 (minimum 900 words) Ongoing Reviews – One-time updates with a minimum additional charge of $60. Negotiable depending on scope. Features – Prices can vary and are negotiable, but starting at $175. Please note that featured projects are not currently a priority for us, but we will continue to consider them.

    Other details

We sometimes accept unpaid guest articles and editorials from developers, researchers, engineers, and other XR professionals who want to share something of general interest to the community.

This type of guest article does not apply to freelance journalists. However, if you are an industry expert and would like to share your insights, you can email David Heaney (dheaney@uploadvr.com) about this topic.

We also have a separate marketing department with a diverse group of writers who produce “sponsored” labeled content that adheres to our publishing guidelines. We do not rely on co-authors to write editorial articles for sponsored content. Potential marketing partners may contact Beck Gibson at beck@uploadvr.com, but this is not David’s practice.

For any other points not addressed above, please email David or use the contact form.
