North America’s largest tabletop gaming convention opens its doors tomorrow morning — and for the third year in a row, Gen Con is on course to sell out completely. Crowds expected to exceed 70,000 will flood the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and the connected downtown hotel blocks of Indianapolis beginning Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, August 2, for four days that the hobby world simply calls the best in gaming. Friday, Saturday, and four-day badges are already gone. As of Tuesday, single-day passes for Thursday ($83) and Sunday ($41) remain the last available entry points. Children age 10 and under get in free.

More than 600 titles are set to debut across a show floor hosting upward of 500 exhibiting companies. The most talked-about of those titles — a Lord of the Rings board game built on a beloved out-of-print design, a tabletop adaptation of a legendary real-time strategy video game, and a superhero RPG launching in retail stores the same morning — each tell a story about where the hobby is going. Rather than betting on untested original concepts, publishers have found that established universes provide a built-in audience that reduces financial risk at exactly the moment crowdfunding campaigns are harder to break through. That shift is reshaping the show floor.

Lord of the Rings Grail Game Gets Its Return

The title generating the most conversation heading into the show is not a new idea. It is the resurrection of one of the hobby’s most sought-after out-of-print designs.

Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit, released in 2000, became a collector’s white whale after going out of print — commanding hundreds of dollars on the secondary market for a game that most fans could not find or afford. Restoration Games and Space Cowboys announced in March 2026 that they are reviving the system under a new license: The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, set in the final battles of the Return of the King.

The design drops players into four simultaneous battlefields. The Riders of Rohan clash against Orcs on the Pelennor Fields. Gondorians hold Minas Tirith. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas fight through Haradrim at the Great Port of Pelargir. And Frodo and Sam navigate the perilous path through Mordor to Mount Doom. All four theaters resolve simultaneously, feeding into one layered outcome. The deluxe crowdfunded edition will feature three-dimensional representations of Minas Tirith and Mordor bookending the play area.

Gen Con 2026 is the first place anyone outside Restoration Games will see the game in three-dimensional prototype form. The publisher is running learn-to-play sessions in Hall B’s event space and displaying the prototype at Booth 1735 in the Exhibit Hall. Attendees who sign up for notifications can pick up a promo Witch-king miniature while supplies last.

One caveat is essential: this is a first look, not a sale. The crowdfunding campaign for the deluxe edition is scheduled for September 2026. A standard retail edition through Space Cowboys — distributed worldwide by Asmodee Group — is set to follow in 2027. Gen Con is a preview opportunity, not an order window.

Restoration Games is also hosting a Friday panel on the development process, including what it takes to revive one of the hobby’s most legendary designs.

Brass Crosses the Atlantic: Pittsburgh’s Gilded Age Comes to Your Table

Brass: Birmingham has held a position at or near the top of BoardGameGeek’s all-time rankings for years — a rare consensus in a hobby that debates almost everything. Its follow-up, Brass: Pittsburgh from Roxley Games, does not simply reskin the original. It transplants Martin Wallace’s acclaimed economic engine to America’s Gilded Age steel boom.

Co-designed by Gavan Brown — who was also behind Birmingham — the new game casts players as industrial titans competing to build railways, pipelines, steel mills, oil refineries, and commercial networks across America’s northeastern Steel Belt in the era of Carnegie, Vanderbilt, and Rockefeller. Newcomers to the Brass family get a streamlined experience: wild tokens, simpler transport links, and a dedicated two-player map printed on the reverse side of the board — a feature fans have requested since Birmingham launched.

Roxley, a Calgary-based Canadian publisher, ran a Gamefound crowdfunding campaign for the game earlier this year. Gen Con 2026 is the game’s first major convention showcase.

Invincible RPG Hits Retail Shelves Thursday Morning

The opening day of Gen Con — Thursday, July 30 — is also the international retail release date for Invincible: Superhero Roleplaying, a joint production from Free League Publishing and Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment.

Free League, the Stockholm studio behind the Alien RPG and Blade Runner RPG, is using its acclaimed Year Zero Engine for the adaptation. The system uses pools of six-sided dice: any result of 6 counts as a success. A push mechanic allows players to reroll failures at the cost of depleting Resolve — the game’s stress and stamina resource. A critical injury table captures the visceral combat tone that the Invincible comic and Prime Video series are known for. Lead designers Adam Bradford — the founder of D&D Beyond — and Free League co-founder Tomas Härenstam co-designed the system, a partnership that grew out of conversations at a previous Gen Con.

The $29.99 Starter Set includes six pregenerated heroes — Invincible, Atom Eve, Rex Splode, and Monster Girl among them — a double-sided action map, cardboard tokens and standees, a custom initiative deck, and a complete three-act introductory adventure called Metro Mayhem. The game is designed to be fully playable without any prior tabletop RPG experience.

The Kickstarter campaign, which launched September 23, 2025, raised the equivalent of approximately $400,000 USD from 3,513 backers. The Year Zero Engine’s Standard Reference Document is publicly available under a free license, meaning third parties can already publish compatible content.

Gen Con attendees can register for Superhero Season, a two-hour convention adventure where a bounty has been placed on the heroes’ heads. Tickets remain available for Saturday slots. Printed copies of the adventure are also available at the Free League booth (#2449) even for attendees who do not play.

StarCraft Comes to the Tabletop — and to Gen Con Demo Tables

Two years after Archon Studio announced a partnership with Blizzard Entertainment, the StarCraft: Tabletop Miniatures Game has shipped and Gen Con 2026 is its first major convention showcase. The game launched at retail on March 31, 2026, coinciding with the 28th anniversary of the original StarCraft video game.

The game commands all three iconic factions — Terran, Zerg, and Protoss — in tactical tabletop battles. Three mechanics distinguish the system from standard miniatures wargames: a Fog of War mechanic uses hidden reserves; a Supply mechanic ensures no player can be completely tabled; and a Surge Die adds variance to combat resolution. The Terran vs. Zerg two-player starter box anchors the product line, with a separate Protoss Faction Box available separately.

The release roadmap is active. A June 2026 wave added heavy support units for each faction; an August 2026 wave brings psionic units and new heroes for all three factions. A narrative campaign by writer Sam Pearson is in development for later in the year, and board games set in the StarCraft universe are planned to follow in 2027.

Cascadia Gets Elevation: Alpine Lakes Adds a Third Dimension

Rounding out the most-anticipated title slate is Cascadia: Alpine Lakes, a standalone follow-up to the 2022 Spiel des Jahres-winning nature-puzzle game Cascadia. Flatout Games — based in Washington state — returns with designer Randy Flynn and artist Beth Sobel for a game that takes the core drafting-and-placement mechanics of the original and adds a physical third dimension.

Each habitat tile in Alpine Lakes is a double-hexagon. Tiles can be stacked on top of one another, raising animals to higher elevations and creating new scoring conditions based on how surrounded and elevated each lake and wildlife arrangement becomes. The result is a spatial puzzle that rewards players who think in layers rather than just outward. Fans of the original will recognize the tile-drafting rhythm and wildlife scoring cards; newcomers will find it self-contained and accessible.

Dungeon Crawler Carl: The $13 Million Crowdfunding Hit Finally Demos

One up-and-coming property driving substantial floor buzz is the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG, a companion to the book series that has since expanded to television as well. The crowdfunding campaign raised roughly $13 million, making it one of the most funded tabletop RPG projects ever. Gen Con attendees will have a chance to demo the game before it reaches wider retail.

Beyond the Exhibit Hall: What Else to Prioritize

With more than 20,000 ticketed events, Gen Con runs practically around the clock across all four days. Priorities for first-timers and returning attendees differ, but some categories earn their reputation every year.

True Dungeon is the convention’s most immersive live-action dungeon crawl and consistently its most coveted ticket. Seats sell out within minutes of event registration opening each spring. If you did not register in advance, it is gone — but it is worth knowing about for next year.

RPG one-shots run by professional GMs and designers are the soul of Gen Con for many attendees. Four-hour sessions run across all four days and span hundreds of systems. Free League’s Invincible convention scenarios and D&D organized play both have dedicated slots. Publisher-run demos of unreleased titles are free with a badge — and anywhere a publisher has an unreleased demo, expect a line.

Tournament brackets for Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer run throughout the weekend for competitive players.

The Gen Con Writers Symposium embeds a full literary convention within the gaming event. More than 100 panels, workshops, seminars, and Coffee Klatches with authors, publishers, and agents are on offer. Featured guest Maurice Broaddus — whose credits span Black Panther: T’Challa Declassified and game work across the <a href="https://comicvibe.com/the-first-new-marvel-masterworks-books-from-clover-press-revealed/” title=”The First New Marvel Masterworks Books From Clover Press, Revealed”>Marvel Super-Heroes, Leverage, and Firefly RPGs — joins more than 80 authors and writing experts.

The Game Design Academy runs two tracks — Student and Explorer — with workshops led by industry professionals. This year’s Guests of Honor are Helaina Cappel, the founder of Kids Table Board Gaming who won industry awards in 2025 for Endeavor: Deep Sea, and Geoff Engelstein, whose design credits include Space Cadets, The Expanse, and the Super Skill Pinball series.

The Puppetry Program features Tony Award-winning, Emmy-nominated puppeteer Jennifer Barnhart — known for Avenue Q, Sesame Street (where she performs Zoe), and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver — across workshops, open mics, and a puppet costume contest.

The 40th Annual Costume Contest takes place Saturday, August 1 at 4 PM on the Main Stage in the 500 Ballroom. The Costume Parade musters in the lobby between Hall A and West Street Plaza at approximately 3 PM on the same day.

The Gen Con Film Festival draws filmmakers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Israel, Japan, and Great Britain.

Live streaming of select events will be available on Gen Con’s Twitch channel throughout the weekend.

A New Home for the Block Party

With construction underway on the convention center’s sixth expansion — a project adding a new grand ballroom and 800-room hotel to Pan Am Plaza — the free outdoor Block Party has relocated for 2026, moving to a new footprint along South Street. It gets underway today, Wednesday, and runs through Sunday. No badge is required.

Expect dozens of food trucks including fan-favorite Island Noodles, the Sun King Beer Garden, and Critical Hit Soda — the official mocktail sponsor — for families and designated drivers. Misters and shaded tables provide relief from July heat.

    Charity Partners

Gen Con has raised more than $500,000 for charitable organizations since its first Indianapolis show in 2003. This year the convention partners with two Indiana nonprofits: the Immigrant Welcome Center (IWC), celebrating its 20th anniversary, which provides legal, language, and integration support to immigrants across Indiana; and Super Heroines, Etc., which empowers women and non-binary individuals through geek culture and community.

How Do I Get a Badge and What Should I Know Before Going?

The Indiana Convention Center Exhibit Hall opens at 10 AM each day, Thursday through Sunday. Single-day badges for Thursday ($83) and Sunday ($41) remain available through the official Gen Con Badge Selection portal at gencon.com. Four-day, Friday, and Saturday badges are sold out. Attendees without event tickets can purchase generic tickets on-site to grab open seats in sessions already underway.

The skywalks connecting the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and nearby hotels cover significant ground indoors — a practical advantage in summer. Comfortable footwear is non-negotiable for anyone planning to spend full days in the hall.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most anticipated games at Gen Con 2026?

The five titles drawing the most pre-show attention are The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit (Restoration Games/Space Cowboys), Brass: Pittsburgh (Roxley Games), Invincible: Superhero Roleplaying (Free League Publishing), the StarCraft: Tabletop Miniatures Game (Archon Studio), and Cascadia: Alpine Lakes (Flatout Games). The Lord of the Rings game is the biggest single conversation piece: it is the first public prototype appearance of a game that revives the out-of-print Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit system, widely considered one of the hobby’s most wanted grail games. The crowdfunding campaign does not launch until September 2026, so Gen Con is a preview only.

Can I still get a badge for Gen Con 2026?

Yes — with limits. Four-day badges and single-day passes for Friday and Saturday are sold out. As of Tuesday, July 28, Thursday ($83) and Sunday ($41) single-day badges remain available through the official Gen Con badge portal at gencon.com. Children age 10 and under are admitted free with a badged adult. Generic tickets for individual events can also be purchased on-site to claim open seats in sessions already underway.

Is Gen Con’s shift toward established IP a sign that original game design is dying?

Not dying, but adapting. Publishers are leaning on IP because crowdfunding — which spent a decade de-risking original games — has become crowded, making it harder for new properties to break through. Established universes like Lord of the Rings, StarCraft, and Invincible arrive with a pre-committed audience, which reduces financial risk for publishers taking on ambitious, expensive productions. Original designs have not disappeared from Gen Con — Cascadia: Alpine Lakes, Brass: Pittsburgh, and hundreds of indie debuts on Entrepreneurs Avenue represent original work — but IP-anchored titles are drawing a disproportionate share of pre-show attention and crowdfunding dollars.

Is the Block Party free, and do I need a badge to attend?

No badge is required for the outdoor Block Party. It has a new location for 2026 — South Street rather than its previous footprint — due to construction on the convention center’s sixth expansion. The event runs today through Sunday with food trucks (including Island Noodles), the Sun King Beer Garden, Critical Hit Soda, misters, and shaded seating. It is one of the best ways to experience the Gen Con atmosphere without purchasing a badge. Full details at the Gen Con Block Party page.
