We’ve officially crossed the midway point of 2026 and are charging into the back half of the year, but the streaming giant’s cancellation axe hasn’t slowed down. From highly anticipated original series that failed to find an audience to reality TV experiments that fell flat, there have already been some high-profile casualties at Netflix this year. 2025 was another busy year for cancellations, with at least 30 titles officially canceled, by our count. As a reminder, that list includes:

The Boroughs
Produced by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers (under their Upside Down Pictures banner), this sci-fi series was supposed to be Netflix’s next big genre franchise. Starring Alfred Molina and Alfre Woodard, the show followed a group of retirees battling an otherworldly threat. Despite grand plans from the get-go to shoot seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back, Netflix pulled the plug just a month after its debut. Like many sci-fi swings on the platform, the high special effects budget coupled with viewership that failed to reach the upper echelons of the global top 10 ultimately sealed its fate.
Selling the City
Netflix has tried to replicate the magic of Selling Sunset a few times now, but breaking into the New York market proved tougher than expected. Following agents from the prestigious Douglas Elliman firm (including Eleonora Srugo), Selling the City failed to capture the zeitgeist—and the drama—of its West Coast counterpart. It was axed after just one season as Netflix reportedly looks to consolidate its luxury real estate programming back onto the mothership series.
Building the Band
This reality music competition had some serious star power attached to it, featuring Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland, and the late Liam Payne. Despite the high-profile judges, the music competition format continues to be a tough nut to crack for streaming services. Failing to make a dent in the pop-culture conversation, Netflix opted not to bring the show back for a sophomore outing.
F1: The Academy
Hoping to replicate the massive global success of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Netflix teamed up with Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media brand to shine a spotlight on the women of motorsport. Releasing globally in May 2025, F1: The Academy followed fearless trailblazing young drivers—such as Bianca Bustamante and Lia Block—as they battled it out during the 2024 season of the F1 Academy racing series.
Despite having the incredible Susie Wolff at the helm and highlighting some genuinely inspiring stories, the docuseries struggled to find the massive crossover audience that its big-brother show commands. While it provided a great behind-the-scenes look at the barriers these drivers face to get back onto the Formula 1 grid, it was quietly axed after its first outing, proving once again that lighting doesn’t always strike twice in the sports documentary space.
Strip Law
Netflix’s track record with adult animation is incredibly mixed. For every BoJack Horseman or Big Mouth, you get a slew of quick one-and-done duds like Hoops or Farzar. Joining that unfortunate latter list is Strip Law, which hit the platform in February 2026.
Created by Cullen Crawford, the series centered on uptight attorney Lincoln Gumb who, after getting booted from his mother’s firm, moves to Las Vegas and teams up with local hedonist/magician Sheila Flambé to win the city’s stupidest cases. Despite an absolutely stacked voice cast that included Adam Scott, Janelle James, Stephen Root, and Keith David, the animated comedy, like many others Netflix has in the space, was criticized for relying far too heavily on cheap gags and two-dimensional characters. Creator Cullen Crawford confirmed via social media in late May that Netflix had officially opted not to pick up a second season.
What’s in the Box?
Landing right in the middle of the 2025 holiday season (December 17th, to be exact) was What’s in the Box?, a high-stakes, big-budget reality game show hosted by none other than Neil Patrick Harris.
The show featured eight pairs of contestants squaring off in fast-paced trivia rounds in an attempt to win luxury prizes hidden inside giant gold boxes, culminating in a race for the mysterious “Super Box”. While viewers generally enjoyed the Willy Wonka-esque scale of the stage and the shifting alliances between contestants, the format felt a bit muddled, and the viewership simply wasn’t high enough to justify the massive prize budgets. It joins a growing list of reality competition experiments that Netflix has quickly swept under the rug after just six episodes.
Bandi

Netflix France rarely confirms cancellations, and there are potentially quite a lot of them, given how many shows from the regions have been in limbo for quite some time. However, one of the rare confirmations came for Bandi.
Despite solid early global viewership and positive buzz, that was not enough to guarantee its future. Shot in Martinique and centered around the eleven Lafleur siblings, the series initially performed well in international Top 10 rankings, accumulating millions of viewing hours. However, Netflix stated that the show’s overall viewership and episode completion rates ultimately did not justify its high production costs. Although the streaming platform praised the series for showcasing local talent and creating a meaningful cultural moment, the cancellation means the multi-season family saga is cut short, leaving viewers with a permanently unresolved cliffhanger from the season one finale.
Star Search
Very similar to the Pop the Balloon cancellation below, this one was similarly quietly announced not to be returning and is another struggle for Netflix in the live event space. The show struggled to have much of an appearance in the top 10s despite some big talent presenting and judging.
Pop The Balloon LIVE
In 2025, Netflix made a number of interesting new swings with live event programming, which met with mostly limited success, if any. One of the early casualties is the YouTube-to-Netflix jump of Pop The Balloon, a reality dating show in which contestants pop their balloon if they believe the bachelor isn’t a good fit. The series streamed live on Netflix for whatever reason and won’t be coming back as Netflix re-evaluates its live offerings, according to a report from Deadline, and departed with the executive responsible.
Miss Governor
Tyler Perry has been a certified hit maker for Netflix. Through a wide variety of projects, primarily movies, people always turn up to watch his stuff, and that’s even more impressive given that he does everything mostly by himself on the creative side and, better still, to strict budgets. Beauty in Black is still a good hit for the show that it is, but She The People (later renamed to Miss Governor – that name change likely being a cause of a viewership drop-off), and it just never really hit from the get-go. It was split over two parts for its first season, and we learned in February that there were no plans to bring it back.
Terminator Zero
It’d been a suspect for quite some time, but one early morning in February, the creator of Netflix’s adult-animated Terminator adaptation confirmed the show’s fate. Despite Netflix Latin America incorrectly stating the show was getting a renewal, the series didn’t meet the requirements to justify a renewal. Writing on X, Mattson Tomlin, stated, “It was cancelled. The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it. I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is.”
Class
Although there had been plenty of reports that Class, Netflix’s Indian spin-off to Elite, had been canceled, it wasn’t until an interview in early 2026 that we really knew it was lights out for the popular teen series. Of course, the show did get an initial season 2 renewal, but like how a few other titles from Netflix India have gone in recent years, it was quietly killed behind the scenes.
The Abandons
Netflix tried twice in 2025 to get onto the Yellowstone train, and Territory quickly met its demise. Thanks to a mixture of poor viewership and behind-the-scenes troubles, The Abandons was announced to have ended back in late January 2026.
The cancellation wasn’t the end of it, with showrunner Kurt Sutter taking to social media (and later changed after Netflix legal got involved) to blast Netflix for decisions that led him to leave the project before its shoot wrapped up, citing that Netflix valued “algorithm over a creator’s vision.”
The Vince Staples Show
In all honesty, it was a bit of a surprise that The Vince Staples Show, which made almost no impact on the Netflix top 10s upon its initial release, got a second season renewal in the first place so when season 2 came along and equally struggled to make any impact, it wasn’t all that surprising that Deadline opted to announce the cancelation alongside The Abandons.
With Love, Meghan

One of the most contentious and most talked-about (even if not very well-watched) titles in 2025 was the new reality series from Meghan Markle, which saw a slew of celebrities come to a house rented for filming arts and crafts and cooking. The show definitely drew some eyeballs for its first drop, although it was a no-show for season 2 and the Christmas special. Citing anonymous sources, PageSix reported that there were no plans to bring the show back, even if Netflix’s relationship with Harry and Meghan continues on scripted projects, although there’s no guarantee they’ll ever see the light of day.
