San Diego, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/26/26 – Green Day gave San Diego Comic-Con fans an unexpected Friday afternoon thrill with a surprise pop-up celebrating the band-inspired comedy NIMRODS.
The event took place July 24 outside Petco Park, where Billie Joe Armstrong climbed onto the roof of an ice cream truck and performed for the large crowd. Fellow Green Day members Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt joined writer-director Lee Kirk and stars Mason Thames and Jenna Fischer in greeting fans, distributing themed ice cream and handing out movie merchandise.
The unconventional Comic-Con appearance reflected the playful spirit of NIMRODS, a road-trip comedy inspired by Green Day’s years of touring in a van before the release of the band’s breakthrough album, Dookie.
The film follows Tommy, a struggling musician who receives what appears to be the opportunity of a lifetime: an invitation for his band to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. The offer is actually an elaborate prank orchestrated by Tommy’s older brother, Wayne, but Tommy refuses to give up on the possibility that his life is finally about to change.
After taking Wayne’s car, Tommy and his band begin a frantic three-day drive from Kansas City to Los Angeles. Their journey quickly becomes a chaotic cross-country adventure filled with mishaps, questionable decisions and the determined belief that a major musical breakthrough may still be waiting for them.
Mason Thames leads an ensemble cast that also includes Mckenna Grace, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee and Sean Gunn.
NIMRODS was written and directed by Lee Kirk. Producers include Tim Perell for Process, along with Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. Ryan Kroft, Michael Rapino and Jonathan Daniel serve as executive producers.
The film is being released by Inaugural Entertainment and Live Nation Studios. Inaugural Entertainment specializes in theatrical and digital distribution, working with filmmakers and producers to develop release strategies across multiple platforms.
NIMRODS opens exclusively in theaters Friday, August 14.
