Just days into its debut on the streaming giant, Netflix’s new series Elite Forceis making waves with viewers, beating out Harlan Coben’sI Will Find Youand Will Ferrell’sThe Hawkto take the coveted number one spot on its worldwide charts.
The French action-thriller follows GIGN, France’s elite tactical force, working as one to uphold the nation’s national security, with the force’s intermix of traumas and personal motives posing a threat to the operation.
At just six episodes, the series overcomes the language barrier for its international audience, making it an ideal length for binging. On the U.S. Netflix TV charts, however, the series is yet to crack the Top 10 for the week.
However, if we look into the history of Netflix’s biggest shows not in the English language, this could still change. Korean global phenomenon Squid Game, for example, premiered worldwide on September 17, 2021, entered the U.S. Top 10 list 2 days later, then topped the charts on September 21. While not every show is Squid Game,it does show that international shows do sometimes need a few days to get off the ground.
According to data accumulated by Flix Patrol(July 25 edition), Elite Forcesits atop the global streaming charts, with an impressive 858 points. Critically, however, the series hasn’t fared so well. While there’s no official Rotten Tomatoes score yet, as of July 25, the series has had its share of criticism in professional reviews.
In a one-star review from Digital Media Talkies, for example, the series was labelled “an extremely boring viewing experience.” In a more mixed review, What’s on Netflixwrites that “Elite Force delivers the goods and even manages to surprise with a few twists,” but the show’s “reliance on well-worn tropes smooths out the edges of a project that packs plenty of punch otherwise.”
