Wakanda forever.
Ryan Coogler took the stage during Marvel Studios’ massive Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where he revealed that he will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct a third Black Panther film, exclusively in theaters on December 15, 2028. Joined by Letitia Wright, A.K.A. Shuri, and Winston Duke, A.K.A. M’Baku, Coogler announced that David Jonsson (The Long Walk, Alien: Romulus) will be the new Black Panther in the upcoming film.
Upon introducing Jonsson, Coogler shared further details about the character he’ll be playing. “The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa, in that film. And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up [and] he comes of age.”
Jonsson stepped out to a standing ovation from the crowd. “I want to say thank you so much,” he told the audience. “Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join. I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”
Coogler first brought Wakanda to the screen with 2018’s Black Panther, starring Boseman as T’Challa, and the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, starring Wright as Shuri. The award-winning filmmaker also co-produced the 2025 Marvel series Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda, both streaming on Disney+.
