While Paramount’s Hall H presentation focused on celebrating Star Trek’s 60th anniversary, fans hoping for news about the franchise’s next theatrical outing had to look elsewhere.

Appearing during Collider’sDirectors on Directing panel at San Diego Comic-Con, filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley offered a brief but encouraging update on the next Star Trek movie, confirming that work on the screenplay is continuing.

Although the pair stopped short of revealing any story details, they did confirm that they are actively writing the script and remain excited about bringing a new chapter of the iconic science fiction franchise to the big screen.

The directors also reiterated that the project will introduce an entirely new cast of characters rather than continuing the adventures of Chris Pine’s Kelvin Timeline crew or drawing directly from any of the current Paramount+ television series. While that may disappoint some fans hoping to see familiar faces return, it also presents an opportunity to explore a fresh corner of Gene Roddenberry’s universe.

Beyond confirming that development is progressing, little else was revealed. There was no word on casting, a production schedule or a potential release date, suggesting the project is still in the early stages of development.

The new film was first announced last year, with Goldstein and Daley attached to direct from their own screenplay. Since then, Paramount has remained relatively quiet about the project, making this latest update one of the first meaningful signs that work is continuing behind the scenes.

With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds currently leading the franchise on television, it may still be some time before the Enterprise returns to cinemas. However, for fans eager to see the next big-screen adventure, it’s reassuring to know that the project is still very much alive.

We’ll bring you more news on the film as further details emerge.
