Somebody once told me… to rank all 12
Overnight, the LEGO Group revealed the 12 new LEGO Shrek Collectible Minifigures and, as someone who loves both the movies and minifigures, I couldn’t resist ranking them.
71053 Shrek arrives on September 1, so there’s still a few weeks to wait. However, based purely on the official images, I’ve already got a good idea of which characters I’ll be hunting down with the Brick Search app when they hit shelves.
The reasons vary. Some stand out because of their minifigure design, others because of their accessories, while a few are simply too iconic to pass up.
With that said, here’s my ranking of all 12 LEGO Collectible Minifigures in 71053 Shrek, from my least favourite to my number one pick.
The unique head mould for the Big Bad Wolf is excellent, and I’d argue every minifigure in this series is good. This one is simply the least exciting. The dress and skirt piece don’t do much for me, although including one of the Three Blind Mice is a nice bonus.
11 – Prince Charming
Prince Charming isn’t the most exciting minifigure either, but there’s something undeniably iconic about him in the Shrek films. The hairstyle is captured perfectly, and a sword is always a welcome accessory. It’s a solid minifigure, just not one of the standouts.
10 – Gingy
Gingy is a strange one. It’s a great minifigure and could easily have been a top-five pick if he were smaller. Seeing him with standard LEGO minifigure legs just feels odd, especially when he’s the same height as everyone else. That said, the icing on his knees is a brilliant reference.
9 – Fairy Godmother
The Fairy Godmother is one of the franchise’s best villains, and this minifigure captures her brilliantly. The wand, wings, hairstyle and gown all come together nicely. She’s just edged out by the characters higher on the list.
8 – Merlin
Merlin is perhaps one of the more surprising inclusions in the series. His role inShrek the Thirdis important, but I didn’t expect to see him as a minifigure. The magical effect pieces, pointy hat and incredibly detailed torso and legs make him a figure that would look just as good in a medieval or fantasy display as he would alongside the rest of the Shrek cast.
7 – Pinocchio
Pinocchio suffers from the same issue as Gingy in my opinion: he’s simply too tall. The short, movable legs would have suited him much better. However, the new head mould is fantastic, and including another of the Three Blind Mice certainly helps. It looks accurate overall, just slightly oversized.
6 – Puss in Boots
Technically, this isn’t Puss in Boots’ first LEGO minifigure. However, this version differs from the one included in 72423 Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots. He’s shorter, doesn’t wear a cape and features his famous ‘cute eyes’ expression instead of his standard face. The inclusion of the final Three Blind Mouse is welcome, although swapping his sword for a sack is a slight downgrade. It’s not my favourite version of Puss, but it’s still one of the stronger minifigures in the series.
5 – Thelonious
A fan favourite, Thelonious is one of the funniest characters in the Shrek films. His executioner-inspired outfit, microphone and hilarious ‘Aawww’ sign come together perfectly, earning him a well-deserved place in my top five.
4 – Fiona
The Fiona minifigure itself is good. The new head mould works well and the outfit looks accurate. However, the real selling point here is the accessory: Donkey. This is currently the only way to get Eddie Murphy’s iconic character. Without Donkey, Fiona would probably rank much lower.
3 – Dragon
Dragons are just cool, aren’t they? The long neck, wings and incredible head mould immediately sold me on this minifigure. It lacks some of the dual-moulded detailing seen elsewhere in the series, but the head more than makes up for it.
2 – Lord Farquaad
Endlessly quotable, Lord Farquaad takes second place. The new hat-and-hair mould is excellent, while the short legs and dual-moulded arms perfectly capture his appearance. His accessory is another highlight too, cleverly recreating the Magic Mirror as a minifigure head. This is an easy must-have.
1 – Shrek
Who else but the big green ogre himself?
Shrek may not be the most detailed minifigure in the series, but he’s easily my favourite. This is our very first LEGO Shrek minifigure, and the printed storybook accessory featuring the famous ‘Once Upon a Time’ opening is exceptional. He might not objectively be the best minifigure in the collection, but he’s absolutely the one I’m most excited to own.
