Jana NayaganMovie Synopsis:A fearless former cop tries to save both his adopted daughter and the nation from the evil designs of a supervillain.Jana Nayagan Movie Review: Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s final film, was designed as a big-budget campaign vehicle for its star’s political ambitions, and while its certification troubles might have led to it being released after the elections (with Vijay not really needing its release to win the elections), it offers ample proof of the power of his stardom. It shows how a star can elevate the dullest of script and make it passable. Its director H Vinoth largely stays faithful to the script of Bhagavantha Kesari in the first half and gives us a fairly engaging commercial narrative involving Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (Vijay), a fearless former cop, and his ward, Viji (Mamitha Baiju). He wants to fulfill his promise of turning this young girl into a soldier, but given that she’s reeling from a past trauma that has made her fearful, he has a challenge on his hands. Meanwhile, there’s supervillain John Himler (Bobby Deol), who enters India with the intention of inciting civil war. The emotional beats in these portions strike the right chord and Vijay and Mamitha’s charming presence ensures that we are involved in the events happening in their lives. We get a colourful dance sequence, giving us a chance to savour Vijay’s “one last dance”, action blocks that pack some punch (even if the violence feels unnecessarily excessive), and punchlines that don’t feel forced (“Naan saadharanavan dhaan.. Aana seiyyara samabavam ellaam super-a irukkum”). But in the second half, the film turns into an entirely different one from what we had been seeing earlier. The angle involving the surrogate father-daughter gets sidelined. From the personal, the conflict suddenly blows up into something macro, involving the society and the nation, and it happens in a very unconvincing manner. The effect is as unsettling as a chef deciding to make ven pongal midway through cooking kesari! We get episodes that are meant as callbacks to real-life issues – hooch tragedies, the Tuticorin shootout, political corruption, religious conflict, environmental exploitation by greedy capitalists, gun culture and so on. And all these are put together in a slap dash fashion that we stop caring about the characters. And the execution only makes it worse. By the time we get to the climax, we are in an over-the-top realm of remote-controlled warfare and social media-amplified hate campaigns that are happening overnight in hardly believable manner.But Vijay holds it all together. The earnestness in his performance and the politically loaded lines (“50 varushama arasiyal pannitirukara kudumbam”, “Motha Tamizhachigaloda aaseervaadhamum ennikum unga kooda irukkum”) sort of keep us interested. And Anirudh does his part by adding punch to the scenes. But as a farewell vehicle to one of Tamil cinema’s greatest entertainers, Jana Nayagan deserved to have been better.
