X-Men ’97 executive producer is eyeing a long future for the Disney+ series. Executive producer and original X-Men: The Animated Series director Larry Houston has revealed how many seasons he believes would be ideal to tell the story without stretching it too far.

In an interview with The Direct, Houston said, “I would say, if they can at least match what I did [with the original series], five seasons, it would be great. Maybe six.”

He added, “But everything depends on the audience and how well-received the stories that they’re doing are.”

As of now, Marvel has already renewed X-Men ’97 through Season 3. Houston recently also revealed that work on Season 4 is underway, saying, “We are in season 4 giving script notes.” While Seasons 3 and 4 do not yet have official release dates, Houston previously suggested that future seasons will arrive faster than before, saying, “It’s only gonna be a year now between seasons, not two-and-a-quarter years.”

The animated revival first premiered in 2024, while Season 2 debuted recently on July 1, resulting in a gap of more than two years between seasons. The official synopsis for Season 2 reads,

“X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.”
