Deadpool & Wolverine became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, earning more than $1.3 billion worldwide. So why, more than two years later, hasn’t Marvel officially announced another Deadpool movie?
According to Ryan Reynolds, it’s not because the Merc with a Mouth is finished.
Appearing onstage at Fantastic Fest (via a video shared on X), Reynolds reflected on some of the Deadpool comic stories he’d still like to see adapted, saying, “There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza [co-creator of Deadpool] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, who was a friend, was an incredible comic writer.”
Reynolds then pivoted to the character’s future, adding, “There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”
The comments are especially interesting given that Reynolds <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/ryan-reynolds-confirms-another-deadpool-movie-1236652695/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>previously suggested he didn’t envision another solo Deadpool movie after Deadpool & Wolverine. Last year, however, reports surfaced that he was exploring ideas for a new film that would reportedly feature members of the X-Men, hinting that Wade Wilson’s future in the MCU may be less about going it alone and more about assembling an unconventional team.
Considering the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, another outing always felt inevitable. The film grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, surpassing Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history and further cementing Deadpool as one of Marvel’s biggest box office draws.
Marvel Studios still hasn’t officially announced the next chapter, but Reynolds’ latest comments suggest the Merc with a Mouth isn’t hanging up his katanas anytime soon.
