The best comics to buy this week, December 18th, feature three superhero books, and there could actually be more, including Unknown Challenger #1, Jenny Sparks #5 and other titles made a strong push. I think that just goes to show how strong a year Marvel and DC are having, led by The Absolute and Ultimate Plan. Anyway! Below you can find my five favorite comics from the week, along with the usual list of releases…enjoy!
The most worth buying comics on December 18, 2024
Godzilla Monster Theater #2
Writer/Artist: Tom Shorey
Publisher: IDW Publishing
The roar of the twenties escalates into powerful screen Godzilla attacks the wrong man and hurts the wrong woman. Now, Jay Gatsby has enlisted the help of Sherlock Holmes, Thomas Edison, Jules Verne, The Time Machine and more to eliminate the Godzilla threat once and for all. Watch our new team sail twenty thousand miles under the sea and transform Paris into the ultimate Godzilla trap in this thrilling comic feat created by the incomparable Tom Scioli.
Why it’s cool: One of my favorite comics of the year continues this week, and as expected, it’s still pretty damn good. Despite its irreverence, I enjoyed this book.
Price: $6.99
New Gods #1
Screenwriter: Ram V.
Artists: Evan Cagle and Jorge Fornes
Colorist: Francisco Segarra
Written by: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
An ancient god dies, and the effects of his death ripple across the universe, raising an interstellar army of soldiers and awakening the latent powers of a mysterious child on Earth. But all this had been foreseen by the Source, and given to its agent Metron in the form of mysterious images. Now, when Metron brings this universe-shaking prophecy to the inhabitants of New Genesis and Apokolips, both worlds are plunged into chaos and conflict. On Earth, Scott Free and Barda find themselves unaware of the chaos to come while scrambling to complete their most daunting task yet: becoming parents. Ram V and Evan Cagle bring the Fourth World into a whole new generation in this cosmic epic. The old gods are dead…and the new gods are born!
Why It’s Cool: If I had to use one word to describe why I love this comic, it would be – epic. I mean, this is a story about the gods of the universe after all. But the creative team also does a great job keeping things grounded in a character-driven story set on Earth. I had high expectations for this book and it still exceeded them.
Price: $3.99
Paranoid Garden #6
writer: Gerald Way and Sean Simon
artist: Chris Weston
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Writer: Nate Pickos
Publisher: dark horse comics
Series finale! Chaos unfolds as the Garden competes with a rival cult for control of the amusement park, and Lou attempts to end the madness once and for all.
Why it’s cool: I’ve loved every installment of this very strange series, and this finale is no exception. Weston-Stewart’s art still seems pristine and perfect here, as the script takes us home to a satisfying, wonderfully unpredictable ending.
price: $3.99
Plastic No More #4
Screenwriter: Christopher Cantwell
Artists: Alex Lins and Jacob Edgar
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Written by: Becca Kelly
This is the end of Plastic Man! Or is it? There are certainly a lot of people who want to stop him from detonating the nuclear bomb he builds with members of the Metal Men – including the son he’s trying to save through the Kamikaze program. But Patrick has gone too far and sacrificed too much to stop now…
Why it’s cool: This book is brilliant from start to finish. It had a great concept, juxtaposing Plastic Man’s personal medical struggles with the way he was treated by the rest of the Justice League as comic relief. But taking it even further is an absolutely stunning father-son story. Don’t miss this one, it’s very good.
Price: $4.99
Ultimate Spider-Man #12
author: Jonathan Hickman
artist: Marco Cechetto
Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Writer: Corey Pettit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Holiday greetings from the Parker family! But why is Peter acting so strangely during the most wonderful time of the year? What worries Gwen so much? Don’t miss the thrilling conclusion to Ultimate Spider-Man Part 2 and Year 1!
Why it’s cool: The most worth buying comics on December 18th this week include: Ultimate Spider-Man #12, The ending to the second installment of this wonderful comic. I won’t spoil the twists and turns here, but suffice it to say that this book represents, in my opinion, what makes this book so successful – the blend of grounded family drama with high-concept superhero hijinks.
