Shakira’s World Cup final outfit boasted over 200,000 Swarovski crystals, which took 120 hours to apply by hand.

The 49-year-old star performed during the half-time show at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday (July 19) in a custom Roberto Cavalli dress designed by the brand’s creative director Fausto Puglisi, with her gown a colourful mix of sunset-inspired hues suggested by the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker herself.

Fausto told Vogue: “She was in the beautiful mood of the orange sunset. This was her suggestion. Orange sunset and pink-bright pink.

“For Shakira, I though about one of my favourite cities, Mexico City.

“It was the neighbourhood La Condesa. There is a beautiful mix of colours of the original buildings.”

The pink, orange and yellow hues were applied to a silhouette from his 2025 resort collection and extra glamour was added with the crystals.

Shakira said of the creation: “We talked a lot about the feeling we wanted to create rather than just the clothes themselves.

“He understands how I move, how I perform, and how important it is for me to feel comfortable and confident on stage.

“I wanted the look to feel strong, joyful, and celebratory-something that reflected the energy of the performance but also honoured the significance of the occasion.

“This is such a global event, so I wanted to wear something that felt timeless but also modern, with movement and personality.”

And the dress represented a “full-circle” moment to Shakira because she wanted it to call back to the neon outfit she wore for her 2010 World Cup closing ceremony performance of Waka Waka (Time for Africa).

Fausto said: “It [was] kind of natural and organic to end the World Cup in this way.”

Shakira added: “It’s a full circle moment – the colours are similar too. We are paying tribute to the past and looking toward the future.”

As well as Shakira, the first ever World Cup final halftime show featured Madonna, BTS, Justin Bieber — who was introduced by Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso — and The Muppets.

The 11-minute showcase was curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, while stars like Matt Damon, Will Ferrell and Pharrell Williams were all spotted in the crowd during the game.

Post Malone and iShowSpeed also made their own appearances during the pre-show 90 minutes before kickoff.

Before kickoff, Robbie Williams sang his official Fifa anthem Desire with Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini, and Tom Cruise stepped onto the pitch to tell the crowd that “football has no language” as he reflected on the tournament as a whole.

He added: “These stories, these stories belong to each and every one of us, to every nation, to every player, to every supporter, to every volunteer, to every dream carried on the pitch.

“So as we gather for one final chapter, let us celebrate a tournament that brought the world together.

“Let us celebrate each other. This is football. This is unity. And this — this is greatness.”
