“Deadpool and Wolverine” is now in its tenth week in theaters and remained firmly in the top five at the box office last weekend. But with its digital release looming, Marvel’s first R-rated movie is wrapping up its theatrical run and looking ahead to awards season. That includes some very ambitious plans for the film’s co-star Hugh Jackman.
According to Variety , Marvel is planning to submit Jackman’s returning performance as Wolverine for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Jackman will also receive a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics Choice Award, among other similar awards. As for the film’s other protagonist, Ryan Reynolds, the film producers will nominate his name for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.
Getting Jackman an Oscar nominee would be a coup, especially since his only previous Oscar nomination was for the 2013 remake of “Les Misérables.” But “Deadpool and Wolverine” will likely find more success in the Oscars’ tech categories, including special effects, sound design and production design.
However, the Golden Globes appear to be the one category Marvel thinks it might accept to nominate Deadpool and Wolverine in non-technical categories, including Best Comedy. It will also compete for the Golden Globe Film and Box Office Achievement Awards. Barbie won the category’s first award last year.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” will be released digitally on October 1st, and Blu-ray and high-definition versions will be released on October 22nd.
