Last weekend was Anime Expo, which saw many an upcoming series get revealed. Of the more high-profile projects, it was weird that Ghost of Tsushima: Legends only showed up with character posters, right?
Now that the expo’s done, Crunchyroll and PlayStation Productions decided now’s the time to release a teaser for the anime. While short, it hints at a similarity to the source material through its visuals: red leaves, the blowing wind, and ink drawings of the characters are part of the games’ DNA and present here. Production-wise, the series will be developed by Batman Ninja studio Kamikaze Douga, with Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars Visions: The Duel) as director and Nitro Plus’Satoshi Maejima and Gen Urobuchi writing.
But what is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends about? The teaser’s description says it’ll follow the first game’s plot, where a samurai on the titular island defends it against the invading Mongols. That, however, was the plot of the single-player portion—the co-op mode incorporates more Japanese mythology and puts players in the shoes of four classes, three of which are the anime’s main characters. There’s the Ronin, a healer with dog companions; the Hunter, who excels at ranged work; and the teleporting Assassin. The Samurai, which operates as the team tank, is seemingly MIA among the core cast.
Crunchyroll will premiere Ghost of Tsushima: Legends in 2027, so we’ll learn more about it in the months ahead
