Texas (KOSA) – Odessa Geek Fest is back at the Ector County Coliseum this weekend for its third year, bringing together anime lovers, gamers and pop-culture fans for a convention built around community — and organizers say this year could be their biggest yet
Co-founder Alecta Carter, CEO of Sukeban, has been in the convention business for about a decade, helping manage roughly 30 events across the country. She said Odessa Geek Fest is focused on creating a welcoming, safe space for fans of all backgrounds
“Geek Fest is good for the community because we are able to bring in and create a safe space for basically anyone who thought they were a weirdo growing up,” Carter said
Attendance has grown each year, according to organizers. They said the festival drew about 600 people its first year, then doubled that number in year two. This weekend, organizers say the event’s capacity is 1,500
Carter said her plan is to maintain and grow Odessa Geek Fest in West Texas first — strengthening the local fan community and building on the momentum — before expanding the event into other locations
The festival is taking place at the Ector County Coliseum in Barn G, with guests and voices connected to franchises including X-Men, Sonic, Black Panther, Naruto and more
