Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock High Westerners and Monterey Plainsmen will close out their season this evening in the annual “Battle for the Silver Spurs”. While Monterey is looking to keep its win streak in this inner-city rivalry going, a win for Lubbock High would be its first in this game since 2007
The game is airing on KCBD.com, the End Zone App, and the Streaming App.
Westerners Nathan Johnson, RB JD Morton, and WR Denzel Robbins have made headlines as some of the team’s most-dynamic players, along with RB Anthony Boyd, who has also stood out on the defensive front. Monterey head coach Jason Sims knows tonight’s matchup will likely be different than in previous years.
“It’s going to be fun to play for the Spurs against a much-improved Lubbock High team. I think it’s a very evenly matched ball game and it’s going to be a fun one to watch,” said Sims. “They’ve got some very good athletes. Johnson and the other guys are much improved. They’re more sound defensively than they have been in the last few years, and just the fact that this is going to be a big ball game for them, they’re going to come with a lot of motion.”
For the Plainsmen, this will be the final Friday night game for QB Jonah Reed, WR Noah Alexander, WR Majd Alturk, and RB Legin Williams. Lubbock High head coach Juan Rodriguez says while Monterey has been eliminated from the playoffs, they will still pose a threat.
“I think we’re evenly matched on both sides of the ball, I think it’s going to come down to the one that makes the least mistakes. I think they’re running the ball effectively and have done a really good job,” Rodriguez said. “They’re the type of team that can take a lead and they can take it really quick. They’re explosive. Their defense runs all over the place. They’ve got kids that can make tackles in the open field that can run hard, and so it’s definitely going to be a challenge for both of us on both sides.”
The game gets underway 7 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park.
