Epic Games has disclosed the odds of finding Fortnite’s Pirate Token after players criticized the lack of public drop rates and some called for a boycott or reported the studio to the FTC.
The controversy began after Epic launched its Treasure Hunters mini-season on November 1. The ultra-rare Pirate Token grants access to the Pirate Shop, where nearly every item is free for 14 days.
Players had spent hours opening chests in search of the token, while criticizing Epic for not publishing the odds. In a post on the Fortnite Service X/Twitter account, the developers said that during most hours of the day, each chest has a 1:137,000 chance of granting Pirate Shop Access. They also said Treasure Hours may have higher rates in the future, citing a window that night that boosts the odds for the Pirate Token and Weekly Gold Outfit.
Before Epic’s clarification, some players had guessed the odds might be about 1:7,000. A post tagging FortniteStatus instead gave the figure as “1:137,500 – Pirate Shop Access.”
Some players called for a boycott, while others tried to report Epic to the Federal Trade Commission, arguing that the undisclosed odds were unfair to players. One player wrote: “All Fortnite players deserve equal treatment,” adding that some players received the token on day one while longtime players with “3000+ chests” got “NOTHING.” The player called on others to “BOYCOTT FORTNITE FOREVER.”
Another player said they “wouldn’t be surprised” if the FTC got involved, and described the game’s approach as “predatory” and “a deceptive business practice.” They also said they knew of squads that had opened more than 15,000 chests without getting items such as a car, jam track, pickaxe or loading screen.
Many fans welcomed the disclosure, though some said Epic should have shared the odds sooner. “Thank you, this is what we wanted,” @StableRonaldo said. @M1das_OW2 replied: “Thank you for transparency but it should not have taken a week.” The article says it remains unclear whether Epic plans to repeat the approach or clarify drop rates earlier in future.
