Possible Love
Netflix
What: Movie, 164 mins.
When: Friday, November 6
Genre: Drama
Why you should watch: One of the most acclaimed films to hit the festival circuit this year. Lee Chang-dong’s first film in eight years is a worthy addition to his acclaimed filmography, chronicling two married couples in turmoil. One couple, a recently laid of worker and his spouse, find themselves the subject of a documentary on Koreans struggling with job loss. They quickly find themselves becoming infatuated by the couple working on the doc, exposing them all to a new way of life and their hidden desires. With this being Korea’s entry for Best International Feature Film at next year’s Oscars, expect it to land a nomination or two.
The Greatest
Amazon Prime
What: Series, Season 1, 8 episodes, 50 mins.
When: All episodes, Wednesday, November 4
Genre: Drama, Sports
Why you should watch: The story of Muhammad Ali has been told countless times, but that hasn’t stopped Amazon from telling it once more. The Greatest introduces newcomer Jaalen Best as the great fighter himself, chronicling his upbringing and early days in the ring as Cassius Clay, culminating in him claiming the heavyweight title from Sonny Liston (Amin Joseph). Given the biopic was made in conjuncture with Ali’s estate, don’t expect anything that challenges the legend of the man, but there remains a compelling story in the many things he accomplished. Furthermore, show creator Ben Watkins has made it clear he hopes for the show to be a three-season arc, so expect more Ali content on the way.
Making Marie Antoinette
Mubi
What: Movie, 87 mins.
When: Friday, November 6
Genre: Documentary
Why you should watch: During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, director Sofia Coppola and her mother and fellow filmmaker Eleanor waded their way through 80 hours of footage Eleanor shot during the production of Marie Antoinette, one of the most divisive films in Sofia Coppola’s filmography. But it’s for that very reason that it’s arguably her most fascinating. She takes the real-life tale of the last queen of France into something more akin to an extended music video, all while painting her as a woman forced into a lonely role she did not want. This documentary acts as both a celebration of that film and a celebration of the mother–daughter relationship that went into unearthing this footage, releasing what is Eleanor’s final project, as she passed away in 2024.
Black Doves
Netflix
What: Series, Season 2, 6 episodes, 50 mins.
When: All episodes, Thursday, November 5
Genre: Action, Thriller
Why you should watch: One of Netflix breakout hits from 2024 is back at long last with a second season. Keira Knightley is Helen, a spy is balancing her espionage activities with being the wife of the incoming English prime minister. In order to keep her identity secret, she teams up with her former best friend and fellow spy Sam (Ben Whishaw) to protect their covert operations, though that’s easier said than done when old foes and tough sacrifices are lurking around every corner. For those who wish Slow Horses was that little bit darker and grittier, Black Doves works nicely.
All’s Fair
Disney+
What: Series, Season 2, 8 episodes, 40 mins.
When: Episodes 1–3, Wednesday, November 4; new episodes weekly
Genre: Drama
Why you should watch: You really have to respect the audacity to bring this one back for a second season. After garnering some of the worst reviews a TV show has ever received, Ryan Murphy and co. have decided to double down and bring this so-called legal drama back to our screens. Proving the haters wrong is Kim Kardashian as Allura Grant, a high-powered lawyer looking to shake up the male-dominated world of law. While one can’t expect much acting power from Kardashian, one wishes great actresses who co-star, including Teyana Taylor, Sarah Paulson and Naomi Watts weren’t saddled with such a dull script and stilted dialogue. It’s probably for the best if this one doesn’t make it past this season.
Stick
Apple TV
What: Series, Season 2, 10 episodes, 40 mins.
When: Episodes 1 and 2, Wednesday, November 4; new episodes weekly
Genre: Comedy
Why you should watch: With Ted Lassojust wrapping up (hopefully for good), Owen Wilson leads this show that is “Ted Lassobut with golf.” It’s a simple formula but an effective one as he plays a disgraced golf pro searching for redemption by coaching new prodigy, Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager). Season 2 continues to chart the duo as they hit the road for golf tournaments across the country, finding success but, mostly importantly, finding themselves with each swing of the club.
