In late September, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposed an entertainment tax hike of up to 570 per cent across theatres and performing arts venues — a move that was immediately opposed by the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA).
While Suresh Gupta, President, AICWA, wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and met Prashant Gaikwad, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, urging them to dismiss the hike (Tax the rich?, Sept 30), the BMC has now responded to the AICWA’s plea. Gupta told mid-day that in the November 5 letter, the BMC said that the proposed revised rates have not yet been approved by the state government.
