The world of Stranger Things is expanding once again.

A new live-action prequel series, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, is coming to Netflix in 2028 — but fans shouldn’t expect stars like Millie Bobby Brown or Finn Wolfhard to return.

The show will take place in the 1950s, decades before the events of the original Stranger Things. It will feature new characters and be set in Marion, Nev., rather than Hawkins, Ind., where the original series takes place.

A short teaser for Other Worlds shows an abandoned bicycle outside a restricted area at night. The Chords’ song “Sh-Boom (Life Could Be a Dream),” which appears in Stranger Things Season 5, plays on the bike’s radio.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, are developing the project alongside longtime writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator and writer.

“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” the Duffer Brothers said in a statement. “It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains,” they added.

Ross wrote on Instagram that Wolfhard had correctly guessed the show’s premise. Wolfhard told The Tonight Show in 2023 that he had figured it out, saying he thought it “would be a cool way to kind of expand” the show’s universe.

Netflix has yet to reveal an exact release date or any casting information, but production is set to take place in New Mexico.

The announcement coincided with Stranger Things Day, the annual celebration of the hit sci-fi series, which premiered in 2016.

Trefry, who previously worked on Stranger Things and wrote the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, told fans she hoped the new show would “blow your minds and break your hearts all over again.” She added, “There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.”

Director Joe Wright, whose credits include Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, will direct the first three episodes.

How will the show fit into the ‘Stranger Things’ universe?

Other Worlds will take place before the events of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the stage production that explores Hawkins in 1959.

The first season of Stranger Things was set in 1983, with the fifth and final season taking place in 1987.

The animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 is set during the winter of 1985, between Season 2 and Season 3 of the live-action series.
